I find this series inspirational. When the Brisbane Collectors group embarked on the A4 dio competition, it was necessary to work out what could reasonably fit on an A4 dio in order to be able to judge the entries. I dabbled in quite a few possibilities. The movie "The Duellists" has a seemingly limitless set of scenarios suited to diorama builders and it was a matter of compromise between what was available in figurines and the topics taken from the movie.
The base is simply a 5mm sheet of styrofoam with a cheap grass mat glued onto the surface (fastened of course to a plywood structural base). Hiding the figurine bases is then a simple matter of cutting out a plug the size of the figurine base, inserting the figurine and smoothing the end result with loose scatter of a suitable consistency. The backdrop is commonly available from JG via your local distributor.
This of course was not an entry; just an exercise in the possible. My own criteria also focuses on what can be done in as short a time as possible as I find my time somewhat limited like many who collect. This diorama took little over an hour to produce.

That is an excellent diorama and you are right that the movie offers an amazing series of fights you could work into a small display. I am also amazed that this isn't your entry. Please post photos of your entry.

Dave

Great dio watched the movie twice since this set was released a very tempting set but as per usual 1 set will leave to another then another and before you know it your collecting NAPS ^&grin

Simple things such as how you hid the bases often lead to great results hey Bob. Nice scene which tells a good story to someone like me that hasn't seen the movie.

Nicely done. I like your photography, as it's a little darker conveying the sense of being in a forest. The concentration of the figures on the duel serve to emphasize the duelists.

If judges enter, they call it a conflict of interest Dave, but thanks for the approval. What are you doing next year? We need some judges so that Wayne and I can enter...{sm4}
Kind regards, Bob

Thanks Brad. It is a truly versatile series and I enjoyed the project immensely. The photography is merely a mobile phone but that technology has come ahead in leaps and bounds, and you just can't beat it for convenience.

The movie is available to order and is worth the watch Tom. The theme is a little deep for some and it helps to have read some of Joseph Conrad, but the colour and the uniforms are a real eye fest. The duel at the start of the movie is well worthy of a dio but the Mayor's son is hard to match for figurines.

You have been there before Wayne and now there are grey hussars on the way. You must recognise some of the figurines on this dio - those non hussar figures came from WA. {sm4}

Bob, I agree about the phone. I recently posted a photo in the photo of the month for First Legion section and couldn't believe how good it came out.

Nice work again.
