EA004 25 Pounder and Crew (1 Viewer)

Normal crew is 6 - so the model is one short.

But what was the reason to have a front shield that folded down?

Terry,

you are correct about a crew of 6, but K&C only gives us 4 gun crew so its 2 short. Reason for only 4 is .... the officer is NOT one of the gun crew, as the gun is commaned by the No.1 usually a Sergeant. The officer would be in charge of a section of 3 guns, and so not a crew member.

Lets hope if (and when) K&C release a new version, maybe Europe? we will get a full crew and the officer as an add-on figure. Maybe we could get a double release, one in the desert and one in Europe, but with different crew, maybe bare-chested in Africa?

The shield is raised in the firing mode, as protection for the gunners, frpm small arms or shrapnel and lowered for towing, and this is beacuse its high and could snag on trees etc if raised.

I have an original Gun Mannual c 1940 for the 25 Pounder QF Field Gun, and has detailed line drawings for the gun and equipment, and it expalins it all there.

Hope this helps,

John

That makes sense as the official "reduced detachment" was 4 men. The official 6 man crew was No 1 - sergeant (gun commander), No 2 - operated the breech and rammed the shell, No 3 - layer, No 4 - loader, No 5 - ammunition, No 6 - ammunition, normally the 'coverer' - second in command and responsible for ammunition preparation and operating the fuze indicator.

The official 'reduced detachment' was 4 men. I wonder how a 4 man crew would be organized?

Even though most photos of the K&C model firing, incorrectly show the platform in the traveling position, it is easily detached and the gun mounts into firing position which is how I display it. Hoogri's photo shows it the correct way.

My only serious issue with the set is the use of the wrong ammunition.

As for your wish for a re-issue with full 6 man crew - that would be nice. But at today's prices, 6 crew is 6 X $35 = $210. I don't know how much the gun and platform would cost, but I bet the entire set would be $300. I think I'll make due with the set I have. :smile2:

Its a bit hard only have one ammo number, so the No1 would help if you only had 4 gunners.

We used our driver as an extra Ammo Loader, because most of the time he wasn't driving, especailly during fire missions, so it gave him something to do. :)

When it came time to move, the driver would rush off to bring up his tractor, and we'd load up and head off, 'over the hills and far away' !
