Here is my latest diorama.
Christmas at an orphange in Durbuy in 1944;
Some history:While most of the other small towns and villages in this part of the Belgian Ardennes were heavily damaged in WW2, some almost completely destroyed, especially during the Battle of the Bulge ,
the medieval town of Durbuy was mostly untouched . The penetration of the German army never reached this small town . It remained outside of the battle zone .
In December 1944 it was the home for the heavy artillery of the 7th US Armored Division.:
During the BoB the 1st US Army ( jeep+ nurse)found itself on the North side of the salient and was temporarily transferred to the 21st Army group commanded By Monty
Setting:
LES FILLES DE LA SAGESSE orphanage is still existing today. During the second world war the nuns running the orphanage took pity of the many war orphans of the region.
Although it was strictly an orphanage for girls, during the war, also small orphan boys were accepted.
Scene:
The diorama shows the orphans coming out of the building upon the surprise arrival of Santa Claus. His motorcycle is loaded with presents .
Santa is accompanied by 2 US nurses and a GI who arrived in a Jeep also loaded with lots of nicely wrapped presents .
Please note
-the decorated christmas tree in the yard
-the little boy on the nuns arm has received long sleeves
-the girl with the care taker has now a scarf around her neck
-the 3 Russian girls ( now Belgian girls) have received shoes and boots and the tallest one is now also wearing a winter hat. The middle one changed her shirt for a winter coat
-the jeep loaded with presents
-the nurse with the little girl next to the jeep, is now wearing a Santa helper's hat.
-the little girl with the GI is no longer wearing slippers but is wearing shoes
-the badge of the 7th armored division is on the motorbike and on Santa's left arm
hope you like what you see
