Well, we finally did it. We finally got to see Eastern Europe fifty years after I first set foot in Western Europe. For years, I had wanted to visit the area, but during the Cold War it was not possible for me due to my military and civilian intelligence background and security clearances. We just completed an 18 day, eight country tour of Eastern Europe; it lived up to my expectations being different yet still European. The only downer was the very hot weather we experienced: 36-38 degrees centigrate or somewhere in the 90s F. Of course, Europe only pretents to have air conditioning and you cannot get a cold drink with ice---cool or room temperature is the norm. However, the tap water in our hotels in Vienna and Slovenia was the coldest and tastest I have ever come across anywhere.

We travelled with Trafalgar Tours for the seventh time since 1992. As usual, we were either Australian, American, or Canadian. I have never seen anyone from the British Isles on any of these tours. For the first time, the Australians, who representerd about half of our group, out numbered the Americans.

For those of you who might be interested, I'll share some photos.

Some examples of toy soldiers for sale. I posted five photos of Josef Kober toy soldiers under the More Glossy Manufactures section. Photos taken from the revolving restaurant on the TV tower where I had my first schnitzel and dunkel beer on the trip.

SLOVENIA: Lake Bled

What a charming country. Think forrested mountains and valleys; very serene and rural in nature. The first photo is the view from our hotel window in Lake Bled. I don't think I have every had a better view from my hotel window before. The castle and church are lit up all night. Pletna boats to the Church of Saint Mary on the only island on Lake Bled.

Beautiful photos, Michael.:smile2: I hope you and your lovely bride had a terrific time. Did you get to Prague? I thought it was one of the most beautiful cities I ever visited, and I had the best meal of my life there.

SLOVENIA: Lake Bled

An excursion to Lake Bohinj which is the largest glacial lake in Slovenia and a cable car ride up Mount Vogel (1600 meters high). Just over the crest of these Julian Alps at Mount Vogel was the Isonzo Front in World War I.

Thank you Louis. Jean and I had a wonderful time, but we were glad to get back home after 2,500 miles on a bus. Yes, we did get to Prague; it was one of our favorite cities. We also had a very good meal there in the castle district, but with no air conditioning in the restaurant, it was very hot, even in the evening.

Looking great Michael.

Eastern Europe is fantastic. I was there too in the mid 1990's.

Thanks for sharing your lovely pictures and for an interesting thread. Earlier this year I visited Rome, Berlin and Paris for the first time and hunted out significant WWII sites (from Omaha Beach to the Fuhrer Bunker in Berlin). Needless to say I have merely whetted my appetite for more travel. Some colleagues from the History Department at my school (I am a high school teacher) are currently doing an Eastern Front Tour with a group of boys: Moscow; St. Petersburg (Leningrad); Warsaw; Auschwitz; Berlin; Nuremberg; Dresden. Their trip sounded fantastic when I chatted with the organiser before they left and I've already put up my hand for a place on the trip next time. The History Dept at my school also walk the Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea every other year and conduct a Western Front tour of WWI and WWII battlefields and cemeteries.

I am very jealous of your trip. Thanks again for sharing.

Glad to share it with you. I took a 50th Anniversary D-Day tour in 1994 with my then 21-year old son, Keith. It was also with Trafalgar and covered much more than just D-Day. We basically followed the Allied Armies from England to Germany through six countries---including the battles of Normandy, Arnhem, the Bulge, Remagen, etc. I believe the late historian, Steven Ambrose (Band of Brothers) still has a company that offers similar tours.

The parliament building (first three photos). It is quite impressive and beautiful. The food on our evening dinner cruise on the Danube was as good as it looks.
