SLOVAKIA

We only passed through Slovakia which was formerly the eastern part of Czechoslavakia until 1992 when it broke away from Bohemia and Moravia. It appeared to me to be a little less prosperous than some of the other Eastern European countries. BTW, the locals we met in various countries do not like to refer to themselves as East Europeans, as it has a bad context associated with the Iron Curtain and the Cold War. They prefer to be called Central Europeans which I believe is more accurate since Ukraine, Byelorus, and Russia are in Eastern Europe.

SLOVAKIA

That is my new Australian friend, Arthur and his wife, Joy on the right. He is a college lecturer and the author of the book "The Organizational Zoo." I love the castle in the third photo---Dracula would be right at home there.

Hi Mike,

Thanks very much for showing us the excellent photographs of your Central Europe trip. I enjoyed viewing the buildings and scenics.....some magnificent architecture and history. There is always history to check out with castles and stately buildings. It was a pity you were not able to spend some time in the miniature/toy soldier shop in Vienna.

Best Wishes, Raymond. :)

Raymond,

You are very welcome. I am glad you enjoyed the photos. Central European architecture is magnificent and I love the castles which are quite unlike their Western European counterparts. Had I gone in, I would have undoubtably bought something on impulse, so it was probably better that I stuck with our group. Besides Bob Walker would have probably talked me into selling them to him since that Imperial Austro-Hungarian era is right up his alley. Besides, I have a special, 10 figure, double Hiriart set on order of Austro-Hungarian Dragoons in 1914 which will console me when it arrives.

POLAND

The sixth country on this little tour of Central Europe. The Wieliczka salt mine which has been in operation for 800 years. Shoring timbers. Which way am I suppose to push this? Everything you see in that cathedral is made of salt.

POLAND: Krakow

Fortunately, this beautiful city is largely intact since it was not damaged in World War II.

Thank you, I am glad you liked them. Doesn't look at all like Australia, does it?

Michael, not much like Australia at all mate, and I'm sure the Aussies in your group have also mentioned this. Btw, is that an Aussie in the denim shorts in post #7 wearing sox with his sandals? If he is an Aussie please remind him it's still an offense in Australia {eek3}

To be sure. I don't know who that gentleman is or where he is from; he was not part of our tour.
