I just sold a K&C item on ebay. I went to send an invoice it was to an address in New Jersey I believe it is one of those forewarding places that then sends the item over seas as I recognized the buyer and address. here is my question. On the invoice it automaticlly showed a 6.5% sales tax from New Jersey added with the price. Does that mean I'm supposed to pay New Jersey the $14 tax or what? Never had this happen before. Any advice?
I just called ebay. This is brand new. I believe NJ is the first state to do this. When the buyer pays me it will automaticly be deducted from his payment and go to NJ. I won't see it. The ebay person said other states will be doing this also.
I wondered how long our government would take to start doing this. I guess it helps pay for more luxurious accomodations for the migrants, wouldn't want them to suffer.

Bummer!!!

so he paid the tax to you and then it was deducted for NJ from your account?

is that right?

I have to imagine eBay is liable to pay the tax on our behalf. I’ll tell you right now, if I have to keep track of taxes in 50 states, I’m done selling on eBay.

The way I understand it I won't see the tax money, NJ will get it before me. But I see the problem being the buyer may say to h--- with it after seeing the tax added on. What was a deal is no longer a good deal. The guy hasn't paid yet, I believe he lives in Russia so he is not yet aware of the invoice. We will see what happens.

It sales tax folks. Every state collects it but they are getting desperate and trying to collect it on internet sales. It used to be applicable only of the seller had physical presence in the state. This has started to change...

honestly...

I can't imagine Ebay...
the buyer...
or the seller is enamored with this new policy...
but it is what it is...

most companies have done this for years...
so...
I guess we gotta feel like we have been getting a break up til now...

Well the guy from Russia paid me, no complaining. But I guess if you are from Russia that is just what you do.

Hi Gary,

Yup, it is new. The State governments are making retailers like Ebay responsible for collecting this tax (same with Amazon) as they have the infrastructure and the deep pockets to go after. It is good news for the small sellers as you will not be responsible for ebay sales and report it on your own. It eliminates individuals from having to become licensed in every State and remit sales and use tax returns. The States deemed ebay as the facilitator of the Sale, thus placing the honus on them.

All,

Y'now we should have ebay representation for taxation man. Actually, I'm surprised this was not the deal from the get go on ebay to collect taxes. So, I guess the online "swap meet/flea market" days of ebay are slowly coming to an end.

The fun always comes to an end. We should make a new website like Angies list or something. Lets call it "Mike Millers list" or "ZB-bay"

Yup, I knew this day would come.

Won't be long before individual retailers with websites will be required to charge sales tax too, that will be next.

This is designed to "level the playing field" so that mom and pop with their store in downtown Anytown USA are on equal footing with online retailers.

Right; that's exactly why this is happening...……………:rolleyes2:...…

It's happening because states everywhere are looking under every rock for money, why not stick their hand in my pocket and take it from me.

Do they honestly think this is going to prompt me to go back into a mall; I'd rather go to a public hanging.

The last time I stepped foot in a mall; four years ago when my nephew got married and I needed a new suit.

I buy EVERYTHING on line; sneakers, soccer jerseys, hats, socks, books, winter jackets, pro sports teams apparel, laptops, DVD's, electronic accessories, furniture, toy soldiers, wargaming supplies, craft supplies, pet food, you name it, I buy it online.

So now I have to pay sales tax for the privilege.

That's just all sorts of awesome.

Look at toy soldiers; how many storefronts are there left in the US of A where you can go and buy toy soldiers; Hobby Bunker, Troops of Time, Gettysburg Toy Soldiers, Kings X and Crown, who's running his "store" out of his Beverly Hillbillies style mansion in Texarkana, I wonder if he has a cement pond in the back yard too?

Unless I missed someone, that's a grand total of FIVE toy soldier stores in the US of A...…………….does anyone think charging sales tax is going to prompt anyone to stampede to any of those stores...………………..yeah, I didn't think so.

What a joke.

But keep throwing road blocks in front of me and other online retailers as we try to eek out a living and keep our heads above water.

Looks like New Jersey is no longer treating ebay as a yard sale. Typically you would not be involved with taxes if the seller is not an actual established business. It would be like New Jersy going after everyone that had a yard sale and sales a few items every couple months.

But looks like if you sell to someone in New Jersey, they are going to charge tax regardless. I had not heard of this development before.

I just found this info on this ebay page -
Based on applicable tax laws, eBay will calculate, collect, and remit sales tax on behalf of sellers for items shipped to customers in the following states, which are listed on this page:

https://www.ebay.com/help/selling/fees-credits-invoices/taxes-import-charges?id=4121#section4

They may also report you to IRS depending on your sales level.

It’s as a result of the Wayfair decision, which was extensively discussed here.
