Apparently on October 1st ebay has started assessing sales tax for almost every state.
The sales tax is calculated on the sale price of the item exclusive of shipping costs...this will sure factor into decision for future purchases via ebay :(

I've known about this for awhile as Ebay keeps sellers in the loop as to changes that are coming; sorry, this is a trend now.

Amazon has been charging sales tax for awhile, Ebay was going to sooner or later, I'm just glad as a seller that they do all the accounting as far as remitting sales tax to the appropriate states.

This is just the tip of the iceberg; ECommerce in general is going to start getting whacked as well, ie, anyone with a website eventually is going to have to start charging sales tax.

This has been floated as some half assed idea to level the playing field and make things fair for mom and pop stores in downtown Anytown USA...…….yeah right, sure it is; it's another cash grab by states, imagine how much revenue this will generate, millions of dollars going into the individual states cash registers so that politicians can get fatter pensions, more raises, more money, more money, more money.

Time will tell how this impacts my sales on Ebay; oh wait, maybe people will start coming back to shows by the thousands now...………………...:rolleyes2:

Fallout from the Wayfair decision of a couple of years ago.

I don't mind paying the sales tax; it is what it is. I do find the way eBay processes it to be annoying. The receipt in the email splits the sales tax out into a completely separate section of the message, and in some scenarios, a separate email is sent. It's irritating to track.

Prost!

In Australia, we have had our 10% Goods And Sales Tax (GST) now imposed on imported goods bought on EBay.

It comes as a 2nd bill on PayPal and goes straight to the Federal Govt. Its a way of trying to give a fairer chance to the local stores when so many people can buy form overseas cheaper and not pay that tax.

Birth, Death AND taxes ... you can't avoid any of them :) :)

I thought that GST like VAT was a tax imposed only on services or goods provided in county.

In Germany we have to pay on every item that we buy from outside EU tax. Under 22 Euros value of goods you pay 0 %, between 22,01 to 150 Euro 19% and above additional tax depending what kind of goods it is.
And we pay not only 19% on value of goods, we pay additional 19% on the shipping costs because it is a service that we buy in a foreign country... That is the reason why I don't buy anymore in US because of increase of shipping cost and bad exchange rate (from EU point of view)
In EU countrys all goods from a seller has the VAT from the specific country that can be different (12-22% I guess)
Private Seller within the EU haven't add VAT.

that's brutal...I don't blame you for not buying outside EU...

Everyone is griping about taxes, but no one has touched on why we have those taxes. We get what we vote for. We are living out the observation attributed variously to Franklin, John Adams, and others, that a republic lasts till people realize they can vote themselves funds from the public treasury. Or more broadly, when you expect the government to do everything it has expanded to do, you must expect to pay for it. Nothing in life is free; everything has a cost.

the way I see it...
we we're lucky to get away with it this long...
Uncle Sam wants his cut...
it was bound to happen...
Ebay's market is too big for them to pass up...

On my bigger sales I include a note along with the item giving the buyer my contact info, home phone, email, telling him I have more of the particular product, K&C items for example. Just the other day I had a buyer contact me and we made a $600 deal off of ebay. I saved the fees, he saved the taxes.

Yes sure....expect to pay for what exactly the non existent health care system or the terrible roads?
My one dollar gets taxed at the county level, the state level, the federal level, pays fuel tax, property tax, sales tax, social security tax....and now on internet purchases really thanks a lot!!!

Vote for what? The two choices that care more about themselves and fighting each other? Or the same two choices that most of the politicians are wealthy because that is what it takes to be a politician???
They are wealthy because they stuff their pockets with our money.
