You may remember last year, that I repaired a rather battered lump - which turned out to be an original of one of these old beauties from Britains.

He eventually looked like this - after repairs and a re-paint:

Well, I have a couple more re-casts, and have started painting them before my next big project - so thought I would share them - so far.
Here they are after mounting on a steady base.

And now - after a couple of painting sessions. I normally don't like painting horses pure black, when saddle furniture is a similar colour - but feel that it will bettter fit the original types, in this case.

Just waiting for the lance-arm paint to dry now - then will fit the arm on and blend in the paint at the shoulder. These are all-but completed now - except for raiding the lentil supply - and doing a job on the base - and a few other fiddly jobs like painting the scabbarded sword (attached to the saddle at the other side).

The black horse has turned out better than I expected - probably because I picked out the reins and saddle furniture in Leather Brown. I will have another two of these, next time I make an order up. The Officer is the same figure - but with an extended drawn sword arm. My eventual intention is to make up an Egyptian Cavalry Band - and have these as an Escort, bringing up the rear.

I must say, the touch of red on belt, Tarboosh (Fez) and pennon on the lance, really lifts this otherwise simple little mounted figure, which are very easy to paint.

Below, find a couple of pics of the two new painted castings of the Egyptian Lancers - along with the repaired/repainted original version that I did last year. I have another coat of varnish to go with these two, which you can identify from their bases as the two outside figures. (You can also tell when you pick one up - the hollowcast version is lighter than the re-casts). The reason for the lighter shade on the bases of my latest versions, is that when I came to open my tin of Humbrol Sand (Matt 63), I found that what was left had gone solid in the tin - and was unusable. I have used (temporarily) Matt 94 (Brown/Yellow) until I can get a replacement for my original choice of colour (central figure). As my nearest hobby shop is a 5 hour round trip - I may visit next week or leave them for later. That's another benefit of painting your own - you can always revisit anything you have done - and change it later.

I have put another Lancer and an Officer ( same casting - different arm) on my wants list - to complete this set later this year - which will then look similar to Britains set 115 which was first produced with this version of the cantering horse in 1903, (an earlier "Pony Horse" version came out in 1901). Note that I always make sure that there is SOME difference to the originals - as I don't ever want them to be confused with the real thing. Hence the bases - and the black cross belts ( which Britains, oddly never painted on). Still nice figures after 109 years, as I hope you will agree. I still haven't lost my admiration for them, anyway.
