Re: El Cid Campeador c.1098
A little "background":
A new display, all figures and castle pieces by John Jenkins Designs. Each individual figure is an amazing miniature. I only made the textured base out of styrofoam and railroad scenery materials and added some colored paper as backdrop.
The scene shows, on the left, a mounted patrol returning to the castle in Andalucia (southern Spain) being surprised by a group of Almoravids very late in the 11th century (1090s). Several groups of El Cid’s infantry come out of the fortress to rescue the returning horsemen led by Alvaro Fáñez “Minaya” only to get involved in a much larger Almoravid attack led by Yusuf Ibn Tashfin (on the right of the scene) which in turn forces “El Cid” (Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar) to come out in force with his cavalry to crush (eventually) the attack. The fortress is in full alert with many archers helping out with their deadly fire from above. I usually keep adjusting the figures after the first images. So some of the miniatures might have changed their position and might still add a couple here and there.
As mentioned above in a comment, I did add some of the Normans and Crusaders (both cavalry and infantry) to beef up El Cid's troops. Timeline is tight, but the First Crusade was from 1096 to 1099 and El Cid died in 1099, so not impossible for a couple of Crusade veterans and other warriors to find their way into El Cid's army in southern Spain.
