I've run out of space{eek3}!! I'm new to the forum but, I've collect W Britains and K&C for about 3 years. And so the unthinkable happened, I've just realised today, that I've no more space for dios! I do have one cramped glass cabinet but it won't do them justice. Has anyone else gone through this, if so is it a divine sign that I should stop collecting. Or are there alternatives to cabinets and tables?

I don't know where in Australia you are but in Brisbane we have a shop called Absoe which sells old and new office fittings. It looks a bit like an elephant's graveyard in that when shops go out of business this is where their furniture seems to end up. I will be dropping by and having a look shortly, but if nothing is available, I will bite the bullet and have something made once the collection reaches the point of excess.

Im in the same boat mate! All my cabinets are bulging and then some, so im gunna have to fork out and invest in another big cabinet, similar to the one's Brett has in his shop, but right next to his entrance door and lined up along his front window. They are pricey but im gunna have to bite the bullet so to speak!

Larso is hunting cabinets for later in the year and is looking at the same manufacturer who made some of Bretts. You should get together - I may even be in the same boat - and go the group discount.

I've known guys to put an addition on the house for collection...but it takes a certain type of wife to pull that off....

Have a gander on ebay under display cabinets (within 50km of your postcode) I have picked up some mirror backed cabinets for as little as $5.00 & nothing more than $50.00, if you are handy a bit of T.L.C and there you are, after T/S on ebay it is my most visited site.:wink2:

Well because the planets have lined up in a very special way, we'll be building a new house about March and it will have room for the biggest study I could possible have hoped for!! 6 x 3 and heaps of wall space. Because I'll also wear the bulk of the inconvenience during the build, I'll also be allowed to get a proper cabinit and I'm thinking of one of those new ones that Brett has in the back corner. I think they're 60cm by 120cm which would be perfect! Well perfect would be two but I think they're about $1200 so that will be too much. I'd also like one of those next to the entrance - 6 levels of display on those. From memory - about $900 for them (58cm by 90vm I think??). They're made down south somewhere??

I'm glad to hear i'm not the only one who has run out of gold in the war chest! I've looked about and found a spot to put another cabinet. I'd fill it with planes and tanks, not so much figures. The problem I have with cabinets is you can't put huge dios in there. My (yet to be photographed) trench dio, is 2x4 feet, unlikely I can find a cabinet to hold that! I reckon collecting parades could work well in a cabinet. One section could be LAH, another SoE maybe a convoy of vehicles. I'm going out later today to buy a cabinet so, will be needing some troops to fill the shelves{sm4}

I my last place - my bachelor pad - I converted a built in wardrobe into a four level display case. It held most of what I wanted. I can't work out how to post pictures but maybe if I email one to Jack, he might put it up for me. If I can find the picture now...???

I find one of the major problems with cabinets is that as a strapping 6'3" Aussie the bottom third seems wasted space. I am tempted in my downstairs renovation to have a book case for the bottom third or so and cabinets for the upper part. Then the issue is that every dollar sent on purpose built cabinets is a dollar less on toy soldiers.

The height problem is probably not as great for Larso - at 5'3" he has to stretch to scratch his head - but it makes for a concern regarding the worth of tall cabinets. I once saw old televisions used as display cases which worked well.

I must act as interpreter for our overseas friends - 'wear the bulk of the inconvenience' in Aussie speak means 'live with my mother in law for 7 months'.

'live with my mother in law for 7 months'.

Tis true! But I swung the deal more on the lines of I'll have an extra 30 minutes or more driving to and from work each day, INCLUDING dropping the lad off to day-care. But whenever a traffic snarl brings me angst, I'll think on my soon to be fabulous display cabinet in my extensive man-cave!

For a true collector there will never be enough space. So find the highest point you can find and just fling yourself off. Simmo.{sm4}

Thanks Jack, i may jump on board with Larso if he gets a good price. I have a local supplier of glass cabinets in Darwin but im going to price around before i take the plunge. Im looking at the middle of this year before getting one although it depends on if i can control my spending on collectables!!!

Back to bad luck toy soldier stories. I was baby sitting my nephew one day when he was about 4 - 5? Anyway, after some excellent game conducting by myself, involving lego and a big box of classix plastic toy soldiers, I popped into my study to do some work, leaving him to play by himself. Fifteen minutes later, when I came out to check on him, I found him with a toy soldier in his mouth! "You're not chewing that soldier are you", I gasped. "I'm chewing all of them!" he proudly replied. And so it was. Noooooo!!!! Over 50 of my Airfix and Timpo heroes had had their guns chewed so that they looked like they where fighting with pieces of garden hose! One in particular, an Australian Bren gunner had some 25 years earlier, been chewed by my sister - his mother. It's quite the family heirloom now I guess.....

Anyway, I managed to snip and clip a few rifles and machine guns into carbines but it was a lesson learned. Never babysit!!!

I have overseen the building of a museum at work and the cost of glass has come as quite a shock. The first cabinet I was looking to have made - before money was thrown at the project enabling the construction of cabinets to fill a room one and half tennis courts long - seemed expensive but I was prepared to authorise it. It then dawned on me that I was looking at the GST, not the price, and I had still thought it expensive!

Middle of the year for us all then!

Yeah, the cost of glass has shot through the roof alright! Im pretty sure my large cabinet (which is similar to Brett's cabinets that i mentioned) cost me $800 when i purchased it several years ago. The cost now is over $1,200 and probably will get even dearer so i better not delay to much longer in buying one!
