I haven't made a suggestion in a while - so how about Mussolini and his mistress being executed by communist partisans along the shores of Lake Como? You have death, drama, romance, history and a car. Hard to beat.

From wikipedia:

Audisio was the communist partisan commander who was reportedly given the order to kill Mussolini by the National Liberation Committee. When Audisio entered the room where Mussolini and the other fascists were being held, he reportedly announced: "I have come to rescue you!... Do you have any weapons?" He then had them loaded into transports and driven a short distance. Audisio ordered "get down"; Petacci hugged Mussolini and refused to move away from him when they were taken to an empty space. Shots were fired and Petacci fell down. Just then Mussolini opened his jacket and screamed "Shoot me in the chest!". Audisio shot him in the chest. Mussolini fell down but he did not die; he was breathing heavily. Audisio went near and he shot one more bullet in his chest.

The Duce was different (and different was his death) in many ways by Hitler, the love between him and Claretta (Petacci) is celebrated like one of the most famous (and most desperate) here in Italy.Mussolini had a wife and many sons (one of them,Romano, later became a world famous jazzman) but the last years were spent with his lover Claretta.I don't really know if this set could sell..looking at the scenes after the executions (Mussolini hangin' in Piazzale Loreto in Milan) i feel disturbed because the people spitting and desecrating his corpse are the same that few days before were cheering him,and as an italian i feel not proud of the acts of the people. You can't really separate the 2 actions (the execution and the barbarian treatment of the corpses) so i don't know if reproducing the execution could be a great idea, but i'm talking of my sensations , in may we'll have Hitler and Blondie and immediately comes to my mind the scenes in the bunker.I think that with the retired Mussolini (LAH021) Andy should produce some other representative o the Fascist Italy (maybe Italo Balbo?) or maybe another version of Mussolini.

It is an interesting suggestion, but IMO before do this I will suggest to develop more dead and wounded soldiers for both sides (Germans and Allies)

Cheers

I don't think so unless you're saying he was not executed by being hung upside down. In that case you are correct. He was executed on April 28 and then hung by wire on the 29th. Please see the following, which contains some grisly pictures.

Mussolini was NOT executed by being hung upside down or otherwise. He was shot by partisans near Lake Como. His body was transported to Milan where he and the bodies of several other fascists were displayed in public.

I'm suggesting the execution scene not the public display. That would be no different than the Heydrich assassination which has been done by KC.

I'm not sure such a set would be that interesting as opposed to Hedrich. What would be is the piano wire scene but I can never K & C making that kind of thing.

I see a Stauffenberg scene as much more interesting. It would be a great diorama piece but might be very expensive to make and sell.

Yes obviously i meant the two events (execution and hangin' upside down) were not made at the same time, it's only the fact that in my mind the 2 are strictly related.I think the "piano wire" it's really an horrible scene and i hope K&C and other brands will never produce it, very bad taste, on the execution there are some historian who thinks it was accidental so is not as known as for example Hitlers suicide.I think the Heidrich assassination was an act of war , not an execution strictly speaking, if K&C do Mussolini's execution why not the Nuremberg executions?i think this is the difference..

I've never heard the theory that Mussolini's death was accidental. They literally took him for a ride, but it would be interesting to hear more about that if you have more information. Nice to hear an Italian point of view.

Yes i've read about it some time ago..but i admit i can't tell tou my source!there was a hypotesis that the Duce was killed in a clash with the guards because he was trying to protect Claretta, and then "formally" executed with Claretta but maybe it was an hipotesis abandoned afterward .I have maybe the best book on the theme (a detective like work) "Gli ultimi 5 secondi di Mussolini"(the last 5 seconds of Mussolini" by Pisano' , but i confess i haven't read it yet.I'll tell you what says about these facts..;)

There is a very good edition of 'After the Battle' that shows where he was shot near lake Como and the route his body took to the garage.

I've been to the location where he was shot. The surprising thing is that it is on a residential street. Must have been quite a scene for the locals.

It could start a trend of great fascists of our time kicking the bucket; Hitler blowing his head off, Mrs Himmler poisoning the kids, Moseley on his death bed, Gaultieri dreaming of Las Malvinas the list is endless............ !

I asked my brother who read the book and he says it is based on the autopsy of the Duce and Claretta Petacci , Claretta was raped by the partisans and Mussolini was beated nearly to death (and his mistress too) , when this happened they were naked (so says the autopsy) and then Mussolini and Claretta were finished, the bullets holes didn't match with the holes in their dresses , so the "execution" was staged, the corpses redressed taken outside the villa and executed for the second time .Many little particulars i omitted as the treatment experienced by Mussolini before the death."Valerio" the partisan who claimed to be the killer of the Duce changed his version of the facts 4 times, the real story was never told , Pertini (an ex president of the Italian Republic) and others were the instigators of the execution because they feared the OSS could take Mussolini.

My guess is that after-the-fact both sides tried to spin Mussolini's death for their own purposes. The right as a courageous and romantic death and the left as an accident to cover any legal or political fallout from shooting a prisoner. Most likely he stood against the wall and was shot to avoid handing him over to the Americans. Any thoughts on whether he would have been convicted at Nuremburg as a war crinimal? It's an interesting topic.

Hi Guys,

Re the above subject… All sensible and reliable info on “Il Duce’s Demise” state that he was, along with his mistress, and several other Fascists, executed by Communist Partisans at or near the location pictured in “Combat’s” roadside photograph.

The alternative theories about their deaths is, I believe, both fantastic and unrealistic. The excellent British magazine “After The Battle” covered the event in great detail a few years back and they are famous for their fact checking and counter-checking.

On the subject of Mussolini if he had lived, being charged with “War Crimes”… I think there is no doubt he would have been and have ended his days swinging from a rope!

Best wishes and Happy Collecting!
Andy C.

P.S. K&C has no plans to reproduce either Mussolini being shot or him and his lady friend hanging upside down… We do, however, have some very nice little surprises coming up in the next month or two.

As Andy says 'After the Battle' is a great magazine, and for any of you interested in the final days of Mussolini its issue No7,well worth a look.
