Did you see this scene in the movie "Downfall" Rodrigo? I found it to be quite shocking to think that kids as young as 12 were pitched into battle to keep such evil monsters in power.

Yes, very shocking scene indeed . But for theses monsters, as Hitler mentioned in the move Downfall, in this war there is no place for weak and civilians.

well i think they were terrified of the red army (as well they should have been considering , what operation barbarossa inflicted in its drive east). One of the reasons the germans put up a fierce reargaurd was to try and hold back the russians and give as many of their people as possible a chance to flee to the advancing US/UK fronts. I think that might be one interpretation of some of the thinking going on at the time, I think Hitler was pretty much out of the loop at this late stage...I think the impression was that little mercy would be shown by the red army

Hmmmm, yes RH, those are certainly some good points. And according to that excellent book Armaggedon by Max Hastings very little mercy was in fact shown by the Red Army.

It would be great to see a dio with the Elephant dug in as a pillbox in the Berlin rubble. Throw in a little infantry support and a clear field of fire and that would be one tough nut to crack.
