For those of you who remember our Foreign Legion series, would you be interested in more figures including mounted Arabs in the same quality colour painting we have achieved with USA012? If so drop us an email with your thoughts.
Any ideas for other ranges you feel are being neglected please feel free to send an email as well.

That's all for this month, we hope you have enjoyed our offerings.*All figures will be on our website www.tomgunn.co.uk and are available now via us or one of our dealers.
Next month will hopefully see the release of our Japanese army radio operator, Kubelwagen and some WW2 Germans, it goes without saying there will be a smattering of Romans and a couple of other surprises.*

Best wishes
The Gunn Team

Last but not least USA012 comprises a beautifully painted kneeling US Air Craftsman priced at $42 and limited to 100 pieces. Some great shading and painting effort has gone into this figure, reminds me of a young Robert Redford for those of you who remember him! There is already another US crew figure sculpted and going into production as we speak and will be due out shortly.

World War 2

Following on from our Australian crew release to go with our 6 pounder (ACC PACK 020) last month we are pleased to announce the release of the British variant (GB007), suitable for western Europe 1944 onwards. As a side note but worth mentioning, we found the barrel of the 6 pounder in some cases was prone to pointing upwards rather than horizontal due to the centre of gravity of the shield mounting. To counter this we found if you hold the barrel down in the desired vertical position required and then position GB008 kneeling Sten machine gunner against the back of the gun wheel as per the pictures below, then this will hold barrel in desired position. For this reason GB007 will comprise 3 figures which will include; loader with shell, officer with binoculars and Sten gunner from GB008 plus 6 pounder cannon set at a special reduced price of $179/£135 saving you over $30/£25 if buying these sets individually! As you can see when our 6 pounder is also combined with RS048 Bantam Jeep it creates a fantastic looking diorama. For those of you who missed RS048, we will have a new Bantam jeep out very soon in two tone black and green Mickey Mouse camouflage pattern.

This set is sold as GB007 and comes in two boxes. Priced at $179/£135 and limited to 100 worldwide.

World War 1

GW081 Air Commodore Harry Cobby, CBE, DSO, DFC & GM was the leading fighter Ace of the Australian Flying Corps with 29 victories, despite only seeing active service for one year in 1918. After WW1 Harry Cobby transferred to the newly formed Australian Air Force. Leaving the Permanent Air Force for the reserve, he rejoined in 1939 where by the end of WW2 he had risen to the rank of Air Commodore. Cobby survived the war to die some 10 years later in 1955 at the age of 61. Our depiction of Cobby has him in trench coat looking up at the sky, perhaps waiting for a colleague to return? Limited to 100 in number and priced at $42/£32 per figure.

Club Figure

CLUB 023 Daniel Daly USMC Boxer Rebellion 1900. Our first Club figure for a while we are proud to introduce Daniel Daly, a hero of the American forces in China where he was awarded the Medal of Honour for single handily defending his position against repeated attacks and inflicting approximately 200 casualties during the Boxer rebellion.
Daly earned a second Medal of Honour for his actions in Haiti during the Battle of Fort Dipitie whilst US forces were engaged against Haitian insurgents. He was also awarded the Navy Cross for his actions during the Battle of Belleau Wood in WW1, surrounded by Germans he rallied his fellow Marines by shouting "Come on, you sons of *****es, do you want to live forever?"
Daly was supposed to have been awarded a third Medal of Honour for this action but it was deemed unacceptable to award one man this award three times. He died in 1937 after having retired from the USMC in 1929 with the rank of Sergeant Major. This is a limited edition run of 100 pieces, comes free to all Gunn Club members who purchase $300/£200 worth of goods through our website or can be purchased for the price of $42/£32 also through our website or through your dealer. More Gunn Club figures to follow later this year including some German officers which always seem to be popular.

Napoleonic's

The coronation of Napoleon as Emperor of France took place on December 2nd 1804 in Paris. Napoleon had wanted to establish legitimacy of his imperial reign, with a new royal family and new nobility. Therefore he designed a new coronation ceremony that was unlike the ceremony used for the kings of France. In the traditional coronation, the act of the King's consecration was emphasised, and anointment was conferred by the archbishop of Reims in the Cathedral Notre Dame de Reims. Napoleon's was a sacred ceremony held in the great cathedral of Notre Dame de Paris in the presence of Pope Pius VII. Napoleon brought together an assortment of different rites and customs, incorporating aspects of Carolingian tradition, the old regime and the French Revolution all presented in sumptuous luxury. According to government tallies, the entire cost was over 8.5 million francs.
Among Napoleon's motivations for being crowned were to gain prestige in international royalist and Catholic milieux and to lay the foundation for a future family dynasty. This stunning figure, NAP047, inspired from the painting by Francois Gerard is limited to 150 pieces worldwide and is priced at $65/£55. Thanks to John O'Brien in Australia for his assistance with this figure, if collectors would like to see more pageantry/parade Napoleonic's let us know.

The Byzantine Romans

Around 286 AD, Diocletian divided the Roman empire into four district administrative entities. The west had capital cities in Milan and Trier, with the east finally settling on Constantinople as its capital. When the Roman Empire in the west collapsed, the territory in the east continued for another thousand years until the fall of Constantinople to the Turks in 1453.
Constantinople was a city designed for defence, it formed a triangular shape with 2 sides on water and the 3rd on the land side. Over time the city was considerably fortified and it withstood multiple sieges during its history, its walls once being breached by the 4th Crusaders in 1204 and then finally by the Turks as previously mentioned. The Romans in the east became popularly known as the Byzantines and were renowned for the beautiful artwork in their churches and opulent clothing. There was a strong tie with the Pope in Rome which worked for and also against the Byzantines.

ROM BYZ 002; Heraclius Byzantine Emperor was responsible for introducing Greek into the Eastern Roman Empires official language. His rise to power began in 608 AD after he successfully overthrew Phocas the previous Byzantine emperor. Heraclius's reign was marked by several major military campaigns which included the expulsion of the Persians from Asia Minor at the battle of Nineveh in 627 AD. Heraclius is also credited with restoring the 'True cross of Christ' back into Christian hands and is known as the first crusader because of this. Our release of Heraclius depicts him wearing beautiful robes and his peacock feather crown, sword drawn as if to encourage his Imperial Guard. Possibly one of our most ornate figures to date capturing this iconic figure from history in all his glory.

Priced at $65/£55 and limited to 100 pieces.
As we have now sold out of our first batch of Byzantine Guardsmen we have introduced a new series of beautifully detailed Imperial Guardsman in 4 shield variants as follows:

ROM BYZ003A Imperial Guardsman with chi ro symbol on shield with red background. This emblem is still seen as a popular Christian symbol to this day.

ROM BYZ 003B Imperial Guardsman with green shield and chi ro symbol.

ROM BYZ 003C Imperial Guardsman with Byzantine style painting of young dark haired Apostle adorning shield

ROM BYZ 003D Imperial Guardsman with painting of old white haired Apostle adorning shield

All priced at $55/£45 and limited to 100 in each version.

That's all our Romans for this month, some Engineers to follow next month and a few other surprises. Our second batch of 30 x Ancient Briton chariots are now in stock and have all sold, third and final batch of 40 will be here in March with most of these also sold on pre-order. Please note we will not be making any more chariots after this run as we are making room in the production schedule for a new Carthaginian elephant as well as some new Barbarians. The chariot can be paid for over 3 instalments if bought directly through us, just drop an email for details on how to do this.
For those of you hoping for some Britons you will be pleased to hear we have some foot and cavalry Britons to take on the Romans, all coming in the near future.
ROM086 Roman Pilum thrower released last month has now sold out in the A red shield variant with only a few of the B and C variants also left, if you are interested in this figure do not hesitate as we will not be making any more.

Excellent pieces this month. The Byzantines are superb and the quality is equivalent to Aeroart IMO. Constantine founded Constantinople in 330AD as the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire. The prior name of the city was Byzantium and it was built in the 7th century BC.

The Romans

Picture the scene, the Roman army sends out a scouting party looking for the Barbarians whereabouts, only one man returns to give news to the Emperor, he points to a hurriedly drawn map on the ground showing their location. Tomorrow battle will commence, so long as the Barbarians do not find them first! Makes a fantastic diorama piece and will go well with our Roman tent and other ancillaries to follow later this year.
ROM081 'The Messenger' set is as follows:
Roman Emperor
Roman Tribune
Roman Legionnaire in scale armour.
Normally the above would be $55 per figure giving you a grand total of $165, combined we are offering them at a special price of $150, saving you $15. The UK price will be £125 which will include VAT.
Each Messenger figure set comes with a shield and 2 x Pilum representing his legion, the A version with red shield, the B version with the 30th Legion and C version with 9th Legion shield.
This is a limited edition set in all variants with 100 pieces worldwide of the A, 50 sets of the B and 50 of the C versions being made.

The Spartans

We are now coming to the end of our Spartans/Greeks for a while as we switch production to the Persian forces. No doubt we will come back to the Spartans later but if you are wondering why we are slowing down now you know why.
The Persian Immortal designs have now been submitted, but for those of you looking for a time frame it will be around 3 months before we see any new enemy for the Spartans to battle with. We only have one Spartan this month and he is as follows:

SPA020 A features a Spartan Standard Bearer with Lambda shield.

SPA020 B version features a Spartan holding a red Cloth banner with Spartan Lambda shield design.

SPA020 C comprises a Greek Hoplite Standard Bearer carrying a new shield design featuring Icarus falling from the sky as his father looks on, a beautiful miniature work of art for those of you who collect the figures for these shields.

SPA020 D comprises Greek Hoplite with a red cloth banner but this time with another new design, featuring a naked Diana being waited on by a hand maiden.

All in all this gives you 2 Spartan variants or 2 Greek Hoplite variants to add to your army.
The above all priced at $55/£45 and limited to 100 in number worldwide.

The Heraclius figure is breathtaking. But is his peacock-feather crown historically attested?

Apparently the peacock feather crown was a gift to Heraclius but if we are wrong I am sure somebody will let us know!

Like the new 6 pounder gun for Western Europe, a must for me, but not sure on the jeep? Have 1 for my Aussies in the Far East, but am unsure whether or not the Bantam served in Normandy? Any thought would be appreciated. Think the chariot is great and I have one, would like to see a second version with different figures. The Spartan range continues and goes from strength to strength, my Spartan group is looking better and better. I like the 3-Roman set and will add to the TG Roman Dio I have.

The monthly releases are always a highlight for me on Treefrog. T Gunn are taking the vast majority of my TS funds, I picked up the Winter Pak 38 gun last month, which I have been seeking for a while.

Looking forward to some more German WW2 figures and the Brits to match my Romans from the 9th Legion.

Although contemporary coinage portrayed Heraclius, heavily whiskered, wearing a rather plain band surmounted by a cross, it seems (after a bit of googling) that the feathered headdress, or toupha, was indeed part of the Byzantine imperial costume as early as Justinian. A Renaissance depiction of the quest for the True Cross actually depicts Heraclius himself wearing just such a dramatically crested helmet!

In case anyone else is curious, an historian has gathered some of the visual references for this unusual headgear on her blog: Toufa, Toupha (1); Toufa, Toupha (2)

Will the Roman figures be available singularly at a later date ? I like the kneeling figure pose, just the scale armour will not fit in with the rest of my collection.
