I love films involving ancient armies using ancient tactics. I'm currently watching 'The Legend of Hercules, and there was a scene in thay involving the Testudo.

Got me thinking of other films such as 'Alexander' with the Phalanx being used against elephants! Also The Eagle with channing tatum is good! As is Gladiator with the arena battle reenactment of Carthage. The first 20 mins is also good ofcourse, but I love seeing greeks and romans form up. The scene in (I know not historical) Game of Thrones with the arena and the Sons of the Harpie are closing in on Khaleesi is also a great one!

Anyone know any other good films about Greeks and Romans that involve the actors using the real formations?

Wish someone would make a film about either Romans or Greeks where the Turtle was used or the Phalanx for a main battle scenes. Can't beat a bit of ancient sparring!

In Cleopatra ( Elizabeth Taylor )during the Egytian revolt on Caesar's barracks. Used a turtle then..In the latest 300 film, when the armored line was set up against the initial Persion assault.Michael

Don't know much about Roman battle tactics but I do remember that the most impressive scene in 'Spartacus' is the Roman legions deploying in their checkerboard formation. Accurate or not, it is a spectacular couple of minutes of film. -- Al

As previous poster, I don't know about Roman Tactics, but I can recommend "The Fall of the Roman Empire" I think it's about 1965 and as I remember starred Sophia Loren Stephen Boyd, Alec Guinness who played the part of Marcus Aurelius, Christopher Plummer playing Commodus. Along with James Mason, Omar Sharif and Anthony Quayle in various parts. The first superior half of the film is set on the German Frontier, the second half mostly in Rome.

As an aside and this really belongs in the book section, Quayle in his autobiography speaks of his time working behind German lines in Albania during the Second World War, it's a shame this episode he kept so brief, but as he wrote he didn't have long to live, but well worth hunting out.

Scott,

Not a movie, but a documentary series called 'Ancient Black Ops' on the History Channel recently went into depth about various ancient groups and their tactics.

Worth looking out for.
