Flags of Our Fathers Interview (1 Viewer)

I can't wait to see this movie - I am really excited.

I am really curious to see how it does financially as compared to Saving Private Ryan. I wonder if the box office will reflect what toy soldier collecting reflects as far as European theaters of war vs the Pacific.

What do you think?

I don't think the movie will be nearly as successful globally as SPR and I doubt there will be a major increase in sales of PacificTheatre based products. Of course there is likely to be more interest in the US market but I feel the demand still won't be higher than European Theatre pieces, even in the short term.

We'll find out Oz, it opens this weekend;)

I have just heard that Eastwood is releasing a follow up movie in Feb depicting the Japanese side of the battle.

That would be great, but I would be absolutely shocked that anyone in Hollywood would be willing to take the financial risk or be imaginative enough to make a war movie from a non-American viewpoint. (Remember Master & Commander when the bad guys were changed from Americans to French?) The movie is getting good reviews. I just hope the battle scenes constitute the majority. The whole story about making reluctant heroes out of the flag raisers and sending them out to collect money seems a bit boring in comparison.

Doug,

The movie is already made I read somewhere. I think it's intended for primarily Japanese audiences so I wonder if it will be released widely here. It will make a great DVD set in a year or so.

Should be interesting to see how they handle it. It is natural to be sympathetic to the narrators point of view. So that makes it uncomfortable viewing. I thought "Downfall" was great though.

I've heard that the Japanese are currently having a significant WWII revisionist epiphany where they were the only victims. My son recently returned from a two week trip to Japan and the group went thru the Hiroshima memorial which is apparently a standard tourist thing. I suggested to my son that it most likely didn't include the attrocities they committed on allied POWs, Chinese civilians etc. He replied surprised: "no it didn't have anything like that dad". I explained to him that on balance it was pretty much a even payback and let's move on type of atomic attack. Rather than the Japanese didn't do anything to deserve it event.

Imo it's very dangerous to only give one version of an historic event as it can inflame younger and easily influenced people into reactions at a later date. Even in these days of mass media you rarely see a balanced view of an event, especially if you know the general population tends to live in ignorance or even denial.

Agreed - good points. I am really curious to see what the POV is really like in the follow up movie.

It is amazing how little the Japanese seem to acknowledge their warcrimes.

I know we did some stuff that isn't spoken of too but we Americans do kind of fess up every now and again.
