I just acquired the movie "Flyboys",the story of Lafayette Escadrille. Wonderful graphics, based on a true story, produced by the same folks that brought You The Patriot, and Independance Day. Highly recommended,Circa 2006.

I bought it and really enjoy it.......some of the members dismissed it because of the german tri-plane fetish that seemed historically inaccurate, but apart from that, I liked the movie much...Michael

Hi Bill-

I loved it too. It was a good entertainment.

I particularly loved the scene when the zeppelin is destroyed.

If I recall well, some stunt men died during the making of it.

Pierre.

I really enjoyed the flick as well. I was surprised at how good it was. I remember seeing the previews and saw some guys running on the top of the Zepplin. I thought from watching the preview that one of the guys jumped out of their bi plane and was assaulting the zepplin so I wrote the movie off as rubbish. Well, I couldn't have been more wrong. Wonderful flick, very entertaining.

I never saw the movie, but with the interest in the subject, and in K&C's new WWI line, I certainly hope we might see some WWI aircraft and flying aces figures!

I'm a big WWI fan and there are so few WWI movies that it is almost a crime to rip them, but this one is not very good. If you want to pass a couple hours watching some planes fly around and shoot - then watch it. But despite a great historical record to draw on, the director decides to make this a work of fiction without making very clear that it is not an account of actual events. Loosely basing the characters on real people (I guess the actual pilots and events were not interesting enough for Hollywood). Throw in a love interest to get some ladies to see it (didn't work the movie bombed). Then put every German pilot in a red triplane because they believe the audience is too stupid to see it unless they are watching a sky full of Red Barons. Put one "evil" German in a black triplane and let him strafe downed allied pilots!!! Very sad and insulting. Everyone who watched it came out knowing less about WWI than when they walked in. Given that most of the aerial scenes are computer generated, they could have used any variety of planes in this movie. Selecting only red triplanes is just an example of how far they will distort reality to sell tickets and how much they believe they have to dumb things down to sell a WWI movie to the general public. Not only is it historically inaccurate, but the distortions didn't even work to make money or a more interesting movie. Just the opposite.

To be perfectly honest, after watching about 75% of this film, I came the conclusion that I should either put a bullet in my head immediately or turn off the TV. I am still alive.

:D:D:D:D:D
Have to agree there, but in my case Missus Heid forced me to pretend I was watching it right to the end.

Cheers

Wow I thought it was pretty good! Go figure. And, no the gf is not over the shoulder reading this. She never even saw it. Should I watch it again to see if I missed the bad parts???

It does seem that hollywood is incapable of making "real war films" with just a very few exceptions. Do they honestly think they have to throw in random love interest or the ladies can and will prohibit our watching:confused::(. Surely, we are not that pathetic:rolleyes:. If I have to watch another insipid sappy love story just catch 10 minutes of good combat action I may take sceic2s option:D:eek:.

Actually I bought it too. Certainly it is not a classic but it does have some interesting flight scenes, some of which border on accurate. But then it is a military flying movie and I had a soft spot for those long before I did my own; more so since then.;) I also have no problem with love stories in war movies as long as they are not too contrived; certainly every war had more love stories than battles:D

You're right about the extra love interest stories. I found "Pearl Harbor" unwatchable. My brother gave me a copy of the video, and I couldn't get past the first 20 minutes or so. Absolutely awful! And I just couldn't accept Alec Baldwin as Jimmy Doolittle (he's at least a head taller, and has more hair than Doolittle ever did).

Same goes for "Midway". It's bad enough that the producers cheaped out and made gross errors in the stock footage they selected for the aerial scenes (the best footage they used consisted of outtakes from the far superior "Tora! Tora! Tora!"), they had to add a love interest between a young Navy fighter pilot and his Nisei girlfriend. The story of the Battle of Midway is compelling enough, without having to embellish it.

Prosit!

Good battle scenes equal big budget which requires big audience; simple math nothing more. While it may be a plus to find an actor that physically resembles an historical figure, to me it is more important to have a good actor.

Maybe they should have cast Ben Kingsley as Doolittle. He's the right height, he's already bald, and he's a far better actor than Alec Baldwin. ;)

Prost, beianand!

I think Ben was busy filming that future classic THE LAST LEGION:D.

I thought Flyboys was alright, except for the Germans all flying red DR1 Triplanes, except for the head badguy in a black DR1. If they had been flying variously painted Albatrosses, it would have been way better.

I liked the action sequences, spent too much time on the love story and not enough time developing the charaters though. Then again, what the heck do I know?

He, he, you don't have to look far to find a better actor than Alec and yes Ben is one of them.:D Silly love triangle or not, I can't say I found Kate hard to watch though.;)
