Do you have a routine?.I normally wait for Dispatches day, check the retirements and then place an order.Do any of you guys do this and how much do retirements influence your buying. There are many sets/vehicles i'd not want to miss, however there are two items i simply have to have. The AK Howitzer and the Bulge Pack Howitzer.I thought that as many of the older Bulge sets were retiring i'd get in quick and order the Pack Howitzer(it arrived yesterday-wonderful set).I was just wondering if any of you have your own pattern of purchase that works for you.Or do you just grab the credit card aim and fire!

No Rob I can't say I have a plan.I want everything but have to budget on when funds are full and what I can afford.I have to let alot go but that makes the things I can get more enjoyable.Simmo.:p:p

See that's my problem,i hate having to let stuff go,its has to be done because i couldn't possibly afford it all,but i fight it all the way!;)

Get paid...pay the bills...keep the wife and daughter happy...proceed to expend remaining sum on legions of little armed men...repeat process:D I've tried waiting on the dispatches just to ensure nothing I'd like to have is being retired but discovered a while back I'm not patient enough for this technique:).

I feel the same way Rob. I think alot of us do. Well I do the same when we get dispatches I go for the retired items mostly unless I have them already which past few dispatches I been up to date with the list so haven't had to buy to many retired items but a few. And then during each month I will buy the occasional set or two. :)

I look for the "gotta have it" items - the items that I'll kick myself for not getting. Then I look at retiring items to check for items I might want before they disappear (at retail anyway).

See, that's my problem...."gotta have it" all the time, it's my perferred drug of choice:D:D....Sammy

Its great to read these posts as it proves i am not the only one!;)

I always check the dispatches and the special NAPOLEONIC COLLECTOR MEMO - sent out by King & Country. It is very helpful in knowing upcoming releases for all ranges, insider tips of future ranges and planned retirements for the coming quarter.

I tell you being a NAPOLEONIC COLLECTOR of K&C has its rewards !

You should have been in the army Ron,you never give up!;):D

My plans. Retirements - but only ones I have wanted for a while - and deals. I look for opportunities to save a few dollars off of retail on previously owned items - from Ebay and elsewhere.

Hi Rob,

You ask a very interesting question and, yes, I have a bit of a routine. I am assuming your question is directed toward K&C collectors. I shall attempt to describe my routine to you based on how I approach purchasing K&C items.

Let me begin with the first of the month. I wait to order any figures until the Dispatches are issued. The first thing in the dispatches I check are the retirements. At this point in my collecting, retirements are far more important to me than new introductions. Once I have obtained the information regarding retirements, I will act in one of the following two ways:

1.) If there are K&C retirements that affect my collecting interests, I will attempt to obtain the figures I want before they disappear from dealers' shelves. Hopefully, there will not be more retirements than my budget can handle. If there are too many retirements, I will make choices and obtain those figures I most want.

2.) If there are no K&C retirements affecting my collecting interests, then I will wait until later in the month to place an order. When I do place an order, I will order figures in the lines I collect so I might gain breathing room before the next announcement of retirements. Or,...I will order figures that fit my interests that are manufactured by another company.

There are some exceptions to the above strategy. They are:

1.) If figures/sets produced by a competing company are being retired, I may choose to obtain them, rather than K&C figures, before they disappear from dealers' shelves.

2.) If a Strictly Limited Set that interests me is produced by one of the companies I collect, I may choose to obtain the limited set in order to ensure I am able to add the set to my collection instead of expending any of my budget on K&C sets.

If the above were not complicated enough, I also follow the auctions offered on eBay. Sometimes, an elusive figure/set becomes available on eBay that I simply cannot resist. In this case, I may choose to compete in this auction at the risk of expending some or all of my monthly toy soldier budget.
This is a choice I do not make lightly as it can easily result in not having the funds available to obtain figures that will be retired the following month.

As you can see, I must make choices each month, but the retirements play a significant role in the final choices I make. If any of my discussion is not clear, please feel free to ask for clarification.

Warmest personal regards,

Pat :)

Pat, i couldn't have told you my procedure any better. The only place i veer off that strategy is when a nice set of trophy figures appears on ebay

Hi Hawkeye,

I am glad the description of my strategy is understandable. I also understand the impact eBay can have on the budget. Similar to the experience you have, I am severely tempted to veer off budget when a nice set of Delhi Durbar figures appears.

Warmest personal regards,

Pat ;)

Makes perfect sense to me Pat. Hope you are saving some pennies for the Matte Durbar :D :D :D

Hi Scott,

Ha! :D The matte Britains Durbar series may result in my ultimate downfall! :D For me, the jury is still out on the series. All the Durbar figures/sets I presently own are produced with a glossy finish. And,...because I collect Durbar figures manufactured by several companies (Britains, Marlborough, Beau Geste, and William Hocker), I already have three separate Durbar displays. Collecting the matte series would necessitate a fourth Durbar display, which would provide yet another display space challenge. But, you never know. I may fall in love with the series and discontinue collecting any further K&C figures in order to stay within my budget. I will keep you informed of my actions!

Warmest personal regards,

Pat :)

Hi Pat,

Thanks for your post very interesting to hear how you go about your collecting. Its funny that although i tend to look at what's coming out next first, its the retirements that are my priority.A large percentage of my collection are items that are now retired and a lot of the time i am playing catch up.One good thing about agonizing over these purchases though is that i know i really want every item i buy.So this is the system i use throughout the year, but at the London shows in March,June and December i allow myself a treat of something newer.....well you've got to buck the system now and again;)

Rob

My way to do is:
Every month I buy ALL the new sets related to WWII, Crusaders and Saracens, WWI (when is available) and some Napoleonic French and Russian.

And every day, around 5:30 I wakeup to realize that it was a beautiful toy soldiers dream…. and I did not bought a single set…..:D

Have a good weekend to all

Rod.
