Guys…
Thought I would drop some pics of the latest repaint/conversion I am doing. I have always liked the command hanomags, Guderian had one which was superb but, I like it when the Germans named and used them in the field. I have always wanted to do a Fritz Witt version and, took the plunge and started on the WSS 77SL panzer meyer set to recreate one.
The wartime pic show the heavily weathered winter washed ''Emil'' pictured in Kharkov that I want to end with (you can see the painted emil on the side). The only thing with the K&C model was that all the figures represent a summer campaign. They had to come out, so, with a little manipulation they were removed from the rear the two radio operators were quite easy but, the commander figure had a small piece of metal which was stuck into his stomach and attached to the half track. it did come away eventually without much problem. He was not going to be replaced so into the spares box.
I also wanted to get at the driver figure and, the only real way without destroying the seats etc was to remove the MG mantlet. as this part is glued on a little debonder and it came off very easy. This allowed the removal of the driver. I did find after removing all this that the driver was not stuck to the chair as normal but, was moulded with it!!!!
I wanted to do this as its no good really repainting the outside of an AFV in grey if you leave the inside yellow. it just would not have been like that in real life and always looks strange.
The only way to do this without lots of problems was to remove the framework for the radios. Again, this was done with some debonder and a little manipulation.
The pics show all of this work and, a bit of sanding to remove the original markings as they always show up under a repainted coat eventually. the other pics show the first grey coat and cab interior painted. I leave the wheels until last as I can hold the set by these while painting
I wanted to use the crew to give the vehicle some life but, they are in summer clothing with sleeves rolled up. I dremelled down the rolled up sleeves and set about making winter smocks for them. I used air dry white clay and, as you can see from the pics they turned out ok. some belts and ammo pouches were added from the clay and some buttons and draw strings. They will be painted and weathered later before being stuck back into the AFV.
That’s about all at the moment. More pics to follow as the work continues.
