At the 1996 West Coaster, Howard Swales and Gerard Prime introduced their first sets of matte painted figures---the French Imperial Guard from the Crimean War. Since I had bought many of their Crimean War sets, they asked me whether I though Frontline should switch from glossy to matte paint. I told them not to do it. It is a good thing that they didn't listen to me! They were right and I was wrong. I was thinking small since all the other sets in the Crimean range were glossy, the new matte Zouaves didn't go with them at all. They, of course, were thinking about the big picture and I was not. Here are three photos of the French Imperial Guard Zouaves.
