Fun ebay story (1 Viewer)

Sounds like my $3000 K&C Toy Soldier estate find...it netted me $31,000 in the end...which actually I have only one item left and I will be listing it on ebay soon...the last item is an unboxed but near mint (I see no flaws) AN008...original price $109 I will offer the item here if anyone is interested for $175 including Free Shipping...oddly enough I have bought back everything and then some all (MIB)...now I'm $31,000 in the hole on top of the $31,000 gained...now isn't that a fun eBay story:eek:

That is a great story.

I purchased a small 3 inch tall Italian porcelain figure at a yard sale once.
Cost me 75 cents. I put in on ebay and I received $100.00 even. Not bad return.

I sold a lot of my old toys for nice sums also. I had a Marx playset, thier Moon Station set, with original box and almost all contents undamaged. The original price tag on the side of the box was $4.95. I sold it for $450.00.

The stories of a collector are almost unbelievable.:D Mine range from a $10K Dinky Airplane purchased at a flea market sitting in a junk box for $22. I got

a free lecture from seller on that one on coming late to the show. To picking up 2 Lionel Standard Gauge Blue Comet Sets within two weeks,

last one less then 2 blocks from my home back in N.J.:)

I have found collecting to be a most enjoyable hobby, and a wonderful way to spend your time. It is also rewarding to rescue items often from damp

basements or humid attics and give them a second chance in the hands of someone that truely appreciates what they often represent. A look into the

past.:)

Makes you wonder what the seller had before you got there:confused:

Can you give more detail about the 10K Dinky plane...what was it exactly?

Ha! Just piles of junk! He didn't even bother to seperate his items, just tossed everything together into large cardboard boxes sitting on the dirt at the Fairgrounds. I spotted a couple of items from the 1950's in the box then took a quick look and discovered the plane. Its unique, mis-numbered in the guide books, and until recently photos of it were rare. I knew about it asked for a price and received my lecture when I asked if he had any more Dinky Toys.

You have to be careful though, another time I picked up a couple of rare Dinky Foden trucks for $35. I then asked the seller the price of several other DInky he had each of which was $250-$350......finally I asked why they were so expensive. He told me they were from the 1950's, so I said "the two trucks you just sold me were from 1952". The moment I said it I knew I shouldn't have. He flipped out.

Pair of trucks were easily worth $1K.

Value of an item is not always related to its price. Another factor can be what seller has in the item, and his interest in the piece. I sold a very Rare boxed Dinky Pinder Circus Set for $250 several years ago. Its worth $1200-$1500, I didn't care for the piece (to much plastic) and I had very little in it. Buyer was thrilled, and I made another collector happy so it was a good day.:)

Uh oh! Hey no Brain Picking! Well ok, maybe just this once!:D

Plane in question was the Dinky Avero Vulcan Bomber #749 actually cast on the plane number on box is #992. Aircraft was a larger scale then normal Dinky planes and was cast in Aluminum. Higher temperature required damaged molds and only 500 were produced. They were offered for sale in Canada.

Early guides listed the piece as #992 which confused many people since number #749 was actually molded into the model. There were few pictures of the piece so it was difficult to know what you had.:)

When I stumbled across it I had just read about a boxed example bringing $10K in auction, and I was aware of the #749 number but I had never seen a photo of the piece. I spotted the fairly unique silver color of Dinky Aircraft in the box and looked through. I picked up a fairly large plane (several times larger then normal Dinky planes) flipped it over and saw the 749 and Avero Vulcan Bomber . I asked the price which was $25
my experience lead me to offer $20....seller countered with $22 and deal was struck. Seller asked me what else I was looking for and I said "Dinky Toys" He laughed and said "You must be new at this! All the good stuff is gone the first day" I thanked him and left.:)

While its true arriving early can be important, I have found its just as important to know what you are looking at that really matters.

Here is an image of a nice boxed example which recently sold for $2425. Price has come down a bit, and it is easier to find images of the piece today.

Man alive!! That sounds like some of my spending habits!! :D:D

I've had some absolutely insane things come through my hands over the years. Way too many to get into and have to type up. It's collectors over beer talk tho.

I could only imagine!! :) That's a beer I'll drink with you. Probably like listening to an episode of Pawn stars

We need to drown our tears over Werth!! :D:p:mad:

Werth? What ever. He's a good player but I don't think he's worth the money the Nationals threw at him. Nope.

Phillies can get a few players with talent from the minors or give other more seasoned players a shot.

If it were Victorino I'd protest all the way to city hall...
