So on top of all the other ills, pandemic, Brood X and rising crime rates, the news today is that 1970's era gas lines are back! Wow. That is old school Americana. And even the first video of a fist fight. Virginia just declared an emergency due to the fuel shortage. Resulting in more panic buying. I'm old enough to remember when you could buy gas only on certain days depending on whether your license tag had an odd or even number. There is suddenly a shortage of everything (lumber, chicken wings, gas) while prices are sky rocketing. My dad's washing machine broke and he has been unable to find a single store in his area that has one in stock.

This “shortage” will disappear shortly once the pipeline is operational. I believe you have a pool if I’m not mistake. There is a shortage of Chlorine for swimming pools.

Whatever you call it, when you show up to the gas station and there is no gas, that is a problem. Hopefully things will be back to normal soon. The big takeaway here is how easily society can be disrupted by a cyber attack. It's not a matter of if but when. And the potential for a major event is high. Imagine the power being turned off in the winter or summer for weeks etc.

Colonial is resuming operations so any dislocation is and will be minor. Around here there has been no problem; it seems limited to the southeast. Cyber security is another story, of course.

They apparently paid a ransom to the hackers. Not exactly a feel good ending. And an event likely to be repeated over and over now that these folks are emboldened. Total incompetence at many levels to allow this kind of national security threat.

The payment of ransomware has, unfortunately, been going on for a few years. Cities, hospitals and other companies find its easier to pay it than have to rebuild their systems from scratch.

Sorry Gas as in Petroleum not Gas as in Cooking, heating etc Gas.

It’s the US, it’s referred to as gas. Other countries such as yours may follow different terminology, e.g., truck vs lorry or elevator vs lift.

We liked the 1970's so much, we're going back to that decade, I've already dug out my polyester pants, platform shoes and my 8 track player.

And shag carpet, battle of the network stars, and those tiny shorts. The similarities are pretty eerie. Gas lines, crime in the cities, Middle East chaos, inflation. Maybe the TV stations will all start signing off at midnight after playing the national anthem. Those were the bad old days.

I can't tell you how happy I am to see gas prides, grocery prices, white goods and such prices skyrocket and my investments tank, gives me such a warm and fuzzy feeling............just waiting for the housing market to crater and we'll officially be transported back in time...............................

Gas supply still very very limited here. Hour long wait last night for $25 max. Still need it to get to work plus I'm on call. Riding the lawn mower doesn't cut it because I have a 30 minute response time....uggg!! :)

Can't answer this without getting into politics, so we might as well shut the thread down now.

It’s not a political issue because businesses and individuals have been hit with ransomware. For example, the head of a small law firm called into Smerconish’s radio show this week and told him that his firm had been held up because someone clicked a link and the hackers took over his whole network. This affects everyone. The Secretary of Energy said it’s only going to become more prevalent.

Payments are also untraceable because they have to be paid in Bitcoin.

Very true.

And it's only going to get worse over time.

Imagine hackers shutting down the electric grid, no power for anyone in a certain area until a ransom is paid.

There were numerous reports of fist fights, people filling up all sorts of random containers with extra gasoline.

If you think the panic was bad during COVID in the supermarkets, you ain't seen nothing yet.

The average American is not wired to handle any sort of challenges, we as a country have had it good for a long, long time.

The conventional wisdom seems to be that we talked to the Russians and told them this kind of action was out of bounds because the group responsible for the Colonial Pipeline incident seems to have disappeared.

I had almost forgotten what a disaster NYC was back in the 1970s. There were parts of the city that looked worse than Germany after WWII. Crime, drugs, homeless, police being fired, abandoned city blocks falling into ruin. It hasn't gotten that bad yet but is trending in that direction. Someone did a fantastic job in revitalizing NYC after the 1970s. I honestly don't know the story of how they turned it around. Most people likely don't remember it. In retrospect, someone pulled off a miracle in turning that situation around.
