Nice idea and car mate,i have 1 on my watch list on the Evil bay.
Hiya Wayne,
A bit of sober thought on the DM Ford Roadster...
Unless the seller saved all the original packaging and then repacks the model properly, what ends up in your mailbox will probably be a mess. It's a beautiful little replica, but all those projections, windshield, mirrors, headlights, etc., will get bent and/or broken every which way. With that in mind, my strategy was to buy a couple of used/damaged models for cheap. Then, I mixed and matched parts to get one good one. As far as picking up a "mint" example ($$$), I'd probably only go that route if I came across one "in the flesh." Anything else would likely be an exercise in e-ggravation.
The idea for the scene came from the truly awful "Pearl Harbor" movie. For about eight seconds, a little yellowish roadster appeared in one of the scenes. I think it was a Dodge, but I decided that the Ford would be just as good in a display. Then I had to find a backdrop that would be appropriate for the figures and model car. The main gate at Hickam Field came to mind, as there'd be no misinterpreting the locale involved:
There's a lot of history behind this gate, BTW. Note the "Art Deco" architectural features. It was designed and built by the depression-era WPA as a way of making work for artists and artisans. In 1978, it proved necessary to widen this main entrance to what had been re-designated as Hickam Air Force Base. This meant that the portal walls would have to go. Construction began, and then someone realized that not only was a piece of history being demolished, a work of art was as well. Sober deliberation led to the walls being moved back to their current location, rather than being destroyed.
All this just goes to show what you can end up with if you spend enough time watching, really, really bad movies.:wink2:
