I recieved my new German sniper the other day (thanks George for fast shipping:)) and have to say it is easily one of my favorite sets, the detail on the rubble is sharp,as well as the ruined wall, absolutely love the thermos and the wood grain box he's resting his foot on, I own a jewlers loupe (a small magnifying glass) and to see the upclose detail in these sets is a true test and the guys at First Legion are spot on!!! also picked up the Russian drawing fire from behind the ruined wall and also a very nice set. looking forward to some new sets to order next week...Sammy

Sammy, I just picked up the Russian Sniper... very well done....Superb detail....The German Sniper is also on my list....First Legion Rules{sm4}....

Sammy snap a couple photos. I would love to see this figure upclose. I don't collect the eastern front but I almost made an exception for this piece.

Congratulations on the new acquisition Sammy...gotta agree with Sahara though, lets see some pics of this trooper in action!! {sm4} I know you've got that beautiful layout- lets see him deployed!!

My WWII German infantry (036) mounting vehicle soldier just arrived and he's another great add on to alot of different varations, I'm using him on my Recon vehicle towards the back of the vehicle just in front of the recon flag support bar, there is a ledge for his foot as well as the support bar for him to grab on to, looks pretty neat, and as of today I'm on vacation so I'll get some pics of these new guys in action soon...Sammy

Question for the experts on WWII uniforms. I really want to pick this piece up but really have no interest starting a Eastern front range. However if FL starts a Western front then all my chips are in so to speak. With that said could this figure mix with a Western front theme? Is the uniform right or is it way off base for a German sniper appearing in the West?

Sorry Joe, I have don't know a whole lot about units/late early war that fought in both Eastern and Western Front for the Germans, I'm sure there are a few fellows who will know and give you that info, but being that these Germans seem to be regular army I'm sure alot of the uniforms will work for both Fronts, but that's just my thoughts, not from books etc...Sammy

While no expert and to tell ya the truth there are none , we are all always leaning . I would say that figure is based more on the Character played by Ed Harris in the movie Enemy at the Gates then any know or unknown German sniper from WWII Eastern or Western Front and that's ok with me . The only things that would bother me if I was really being picky would be the Edelweiss cap badge on his Bergmütze or M43 field cap can't tell which its too be from the photo's I have seen and the style Anorak he is wearing . But I would think 99.99% of the people in the world would not know one way or the other and you could put this figure anywhere you want and it would be a GREAT addition to any collection . I don't have it yet but I will :wink2: I think it is the best looking German Sniper figure I have seen . I do expect more from FL and I think they do a great job that's one of the reasons I own em , I try not to be too anal about toy soldiers unless they are really poorly done its when I'm buyng an original piece for my collection that I get the microscope out :redface2: Regards Gebhard

Thanks guys for the help. I pulled the trigger on this one and ordered it. I just wanted to make sure that it wouldn't be to out of place if I put him in a western front diorama scene. Regardless I love the figure and had to have it. Although I might be having second thoughts now that Gebhard let the cat out of the bag about the field cap ^&grin Seriously though thanks for the info Gebhard. If thats the only issue that can be seen then I don't perceive it to be a problem.

The more I research the more I find I don't know, my knowledge an interests are D-Day to St Lo. But there are some very knowledgable members who collect FL. I asked the same questions and the answer seems to be they are fine for the early war years in the West up to around D-Day and there is always an exception even after D-Day. The Jack boots are the most significant icon of the early years, but you can find a pic here and there with Germans in Jack boots during Normandy and a bit beyond.

I think us Western guys are all waiting for FL to go West (Hint) and we will fully dive in. Although Frank and others have got me interested in the East as of late.....Good luck. Alex

OH ...not sure about the Sniper.

Sahara..

Never seen these coats in any winter shots etc in the west as everyone knows it but, there are a few pics of german units in books in northern Italy wearing very similar coats. not one with a scope on the rifle but, thats easy enough to presume snipers were on all fronts at one time or another and, many ordinary troops had aquired scopes for their rifles or, piched them from dead soldiers.

IMO you would be able to work this figure into a western theatre dio or setting with relative ease

Here is a picture taken in Normandy 1944 which is likely a good example of the mix of uniform elements durinig this period.
Note the variety of field tunics 1935-1943 pattern with many personal modifications. As for footwear there is a mix of marching boots (Marschstiefel) and ankle boots (Schnürschuhe).

It should be noted that there are two varieties of the marching boot (Marschstiefel). The earlier boot was taller and had a quality finish. The first restrictions on leather usage appeared November 9, 1939 but didn't really become effective until the srping of 1940. The new shorter boot had a calf length of 29cm compared to the 35cm of the original. It was much rougher than the original and was supplied in natural leather. The troops then dyed the boots themselves.

As for the German sniper. This figure looks to be modeled on Ed Harris`character in Enemy at the Gates. I didn`t recognize the jacket so I did a little internet research to discover there is a fair bit of speculation regarding this jacket with some suggesting it is a Swedish M1909. Perhaps it's a "Hollywood" creation. Like the Harris character the figure is wearing a Bergmutze which suggests Gebirgsjäger.

My Pleasure .
Like I mentioned , "I would say that figure is based more on the Character played by Ed Harris in the movie Enemy at the Gates then any know or unknown German sniper from WWII Eastern or Western Front and that's ok with me" , It seems its ok with you also as you have already bought the figure {bravo}}. I didn't feel the need to go too into what Mr Harris was or should have been wearing in the movie . Like I said I try not to get to anal about Toy Soldiers :wink2: or Movies for that matter , I'm just happy to see someone making both about periods I love ....:wink2:
The only rule I try to at least follow when considering a TS for my collection is don't have a figure wearing or using something that was not yet invented at the time he is portraying . Since this tread is turning into a whether or not you could use First Legions fine figures for Western front or not ^&confuse well of course you could that is just silly to think you couldn't but I would suggest staying away from GERSTAL017 - German Heer Infantry Laying Behind Wall with PPSH41 and MP40 .. as the PPSh was not a prefered weapon in Normandy ^&grin .... Don't worry Joe, once you see this set close up it's gonna blow you away, one of the best releases to date for WWII sets yet, and from the info that has been giving sounds like he would fit well in a Western Front scene, so let us know what you think once you look over this set...Sammy

Some great info guys. Thanks again for the help. I'm really looking forward to seeing what this piece looks like up close. I have seen nothing but good comments about it. I think ill be very happy with it as the starter piece for my FL WWII collection.

Sahara..

It is a nice piece the only thing I would have liked would have been the figure to have been removable from the display it comes on. If you build it into a dio you have to make it similar to the base and, for me, that kind of restricts what you can do with it. I would like to see this figure in a shattered loft with a window frame and straw etc in the loft or, similar.

Not a massive issue but, one that would have made the figure more flexible

I received this figure a couple weeks ago and I have to say I was really impressed with it. To your point Mitch, while the figure makes a fantastic little vingette it will be rather challenging to incorporate into my scenes (but I will find a way :wink2:). My hope is as FL releases more terrain pieces it will become easier to blend pieces like this into scenes.
