The Gettysburg Companion by Mark Atkin's (Waterloo Companion).
does anyone own this is it any good ?

Got it some time ago and can really recommend it. Excellent piece of work, well illustrated and very informative.

I've got the Gettysburg and Waterloo editions; both are a must have if you are a fan of either battle (or in my case, both).

The maps are superb, there are arial photographs of the terrain today showing where troops were positioned during the battle. There are several panoramic shots that really give the reader an excellent take on the terrain at the time.

Both get a thumbs up from me to say the least.........

I too, own both the Waterloo and Gettysburg companion books. They are both must haves if you are into the nitty gritty detail of these battles. I enjoy both books and I continue to use them as good references then and again for stats and detailed uniform/weapons descriptions. There is a third book that I don't have but would like to get eventually called "The Trafalgar Companion". This is a great series of books. I bought them on Amazon for a discount with free shipping which is still one of the best deals on books out there. :)

I only have the Waterloo edition but I would say it is indeed excellent and that the above certainly applies to that version. I can't imagine that the Gettysburg work would not be extremely good as well.

ups just delivered it from barnes and noble..... thought the box was filled with bricks. its very impressive and i havent even looked at it yet.... thanks for the recommendation guys.......

I have the Waterloo book which is a must have. I was unaware their was a Gettysburg Companion. When I read it here last nite I was stumbling all over myself and knocking stuf over in a flash out the door keys in hand to race to the bookstores before they closed. Alas none there.Have one on order, can't wait.

Just got My Waterloo book have only read a few pages here and there realy need to bury my head into it.
Some good artwork of the battle would have been good...but it was well worth the $$$$
Let us know Harold what you think of the Gettysburg book.:)

Don't have the Gettysburg volume, but I do have the Waterloo Companion. Probably the best reference I have ever seen on the battle. So much detail, it takes days just to look everything over once! This type of book is certainly for those who need to 'flesh out' the details alluded to in the more common narritives.

I have lost count of the number of Gettysburg books that I have bending my book-shelves and before the issue of this tome my favorite and the most well thumbed book had been the American Heritage-History of the Battle of Gettysburg by Craig L Symonds even though it was dotted with quite a few inaccuracies.

But this brick of a book (don't attempt reading it in bed because if you fall asleep and let the book fall it could easily break your nose) has to be without any doubt the best I've ever read for crystal clarity of those battle-packed three July days. Highly and thoroughly recommended. Buy it!

As an aside however, did read that the author faces litigation for plagiarising other historians work without giving due acknowledgement.

I saw a copy of the Gettysburg Campanion the other day and after leafing through it, decided that it was more in the "coffee table" variety of a book and would only be good for a general version of the battle. I long ago got rid of most of the general over views of the battle and try to focus my library on primary sources. Besides the in accuracies and use of other historians work, it has also had a few bad reviews. There are better reference books available on the market with better research and more in sight into the battle. This is just my personal opinion.

Hope this helps.
