For the past several months I have owned and read "Brigades of Gettysburg; The Union and Confederate Brigades at the Battle of Gettysburg" by Bradley M. Gottfried (Da Capo Press, ISBN 0-306-81175-8), which, in my opinion, is one of the best books/references written about this battle. What I really like about it is that it was written from the perspective at the Brigade level clearly detailing every Regiment's involvement at Gettysburg. This book only covers the infantry regiments and brigades - cavalry regiments and artillery batteries were not included. Yesterday I received the companion book "The Maps of Gettysburg; An Atlas of the Gettysburg Campaign, June 3-July 13, 1863" also by Bradley M. Gottfried (Savas Beatie LLC, ISBN-13 978-1-932714-82-1). The copy I received is the revised full-color edition and it has 144 detailed full-page maps which comprise the whole campaign, the majority of which depict actions at the Brigade level clearly showing the movement of each regiment involved. The maps are so detailed that woods, corn, orchards, grains, worm fences, post & rail fences, stone fences, family farm houses/structures, water features, major roads, secondary roads, and farm lanes are all shown. Its an incredible reference - each full page map is accompanied by a full page historical description of what occured on its associated map. I am very, very pleased with both books - an absolute must have for the collector's ACW library. The detail combined in both books would enable historical miniature collectors the ability to knowledgeably discuss their favorite regiment's involvement in this battle but would also faciliate their ability to design incredibly detailed dioramas of every aspect of this most famous battle.
