glossy poses (1 Viewer)

I forgot to mention Tommy Atkins/Fusilier, which to me are a little forgotten at this forum, they make wonderful figures, especially the T. Atkins Jacobite Rebellion series. Tedtoy is also excellent.

Good point about Fusilier Jacobite figures Paulo - but it's not just confined to those beauties either. Have a look at these WW1 bandsmen from Fusilier which I did recently. See how just the merest hint of colour from the bugle-cords and drums just lifts these figures, not often associated with the most colourful. Glossies to a man - and I think are just smashing. johnnybach

Dave, I have only seen Britains AZW on photo, but from that they look very well done. I've also seen some of Britains Napoleonic Coldstream Guards in matte, first hand, and they did look very nice. And if you go to First Legion, then IMHO most of their matte figures are really excellent... I like and thoroughly agree on your glossy leeway point, it's a fact IMO, it's probably easier to make a great glossy figure than a matte one, but in fact my favourite glossy figures (Imperial, John Firth painted figures, SOW, Britains Redcoats) don't use that leeway and compete with the best matte figures when it comes to detail and overall quality (again in my view).
Very personal thing, like Louis pointed out.

Paulo,

My first matte purchase was First Legion, and I'm going to stick with First Legion. They are the only matte manufacturer that make a realistic-looking figure. That is just my opinion, though. Otherwise, I'm primarily a glossy guy. If I had to rank my favorite manufacturers, based on artistry, sculpts, painting, etc, it would be hard.

1) Trophy is my favorite, but some of Len's early sculpts are too awkward and anoemic for my taste.

2) Imperial wins hands down for consistency of painting, quality of sculpture, and sheer traditional glossy elegance.

3) As a glossy snob, I hate to admit that First Legion is my number three, but they make the best matte figure on the market, IMHO. (I still feel guilty, though.)

4) Tradition has some really fine sculpts; some great talent has worked, and does work, at Tradition. If I ever learn to paint, it will be Tradition castings all the way. Unfortunately, their factory paint jobs can be sub-par.

As far as other manufacturers are concerned, I can't afford to buy soldiers from everybody, so my comments shouldn't be viewed as denigrating any other manufacturers, except . . . I guess that post goes on another thread.

These are just the misguided ramblings of crazy man, if you ask my wife, so do with them what you will.

Simple answer is if you see a figure you like but it is not in the finish you like, ask the maker if he can provide it as you want it. Most makers will be only too happy to oblige as witness Nik Biberovic at ATS, he will supply his product in kit form, gloss finish, matt finish and will even undertake to make special figures for you in addition he will even make specific buildings and scenery. A very accomodating service by a dedicated young man. Trooper

I fully agree with Dave's comments, and would add:

Soldiers of the World, from New Zealand - Very well painted glossy figures, always consitent high quality. The Napoleonic range has a vast number of sets, some of them quite unique, i.e. French Engineers of the Guard in the black body armour.

And since I do paint - I think the sculpting and variety of matte figures by J.Jenkins & W.Britains is outstanding. With a little repainting and a good clear coat, they become great glossies. - Ken

Heartily agree Trooper - just ordered a kit of a Brewers Dray ( see - I don't just do bands - Hic!) from ATS, and Nik is a very nice guy to deal with - and helped me complete my order - which was a non-standard, unpainted castings kit. It didn't say that on the tin - but I asked - and he was only too pleased to accomodate. Johnnybach.

The motto is therefore - If you don't know if they will do it the way you like it -- ASK!

Oh, these are really lovely, I do have a few WWI glossy sets myself (Fusilier,SOW, Premier, Trophy), I believe I have photos in my albums, to me they are keepers...
