God Save The Queen - Rule Britainnia (1 Viewer)

When the Pistols released God Save the Queen back in 1977 there was indignation and outrage. The song was banned and even though it reached number 1 it was not listed as such by the powers that be. The Pistols were described as foul mouthed yobs and accused of being anti- British. 30 years later they are fondly remembered as a great Britsh institution and punk rock as a great British invention. This is of course hotly disputed by the New York movement made up of the Ramones and Blondie who claim that punk was an American invention. Certainly punk lots a lot of its impetus in the UK and quickly gave way to the excess of New Wave whereas in the US it crossed teh continent and put down roots in California and gave rise to a vibrnat west coast scene spearheaded by the Dead kennedys and harcore bands like Black Flag and Bad Religion.

Neither The Ramones nor Blondie were ever punks - not by any stretch of the imagination. Luved them though - and still do.

Well, if we're talking British punk rock bands we better be sure to mention Stiff Little Fingers--especially considering we have a former member of said band right here as a member of the forum. :D
 
Hey we even had a punk rock scene in Durban. We had soem great bands like the *** Marines and Dog Detachment. The *** Marines all got conscripted and we never heard much more from them.

Not sure what your point is with this Ron; you are a Napoleonics collector and the French fought the British, so having British troops in your collection makes sense since they fought the French.

Am I missing something here?

A like thinking man, but the pants thing is not unique to punks. I watched my 23 year old Latino gardener trip on his low riders whilst mowing the lawn. Since he did not let go of the mower , it kept on chugging across the yard. He was not hurt so it was funny ..........................................
 
The Ramones were the most famous NYC punk band, but David Johanson a/k/a Buster Poindexter was a member of the seminal New York City Punk Band . . . 10 points for anyone who can name it.

I also loved the California Punk scene . . . Black Flag, the Dead Kennedy's, Suicidal Tendency . . . anybody remember a band called The Angry Samoans?

But for my, the Sex Pistols are the grandaddy of the whole movement . . . I am not old enough to have seen them live, but I saw Public Image Limited (Johnny Rotten's post Sex Pistols band) live, as well as the Clash.
 
If we're talkin angry young men I'll still take The Who's Summertime Blues and Teenage Wasteland saw it live a half dozen times and was never disappointed!

I sort of missed the Punk era, but came close with some Alternative Rock verging on Punk acts local to Minneapolis. Enjoyed seeing Husker Du and the Replacements live a few times. Most recent concert earlier this year was Foo Fighters which was a very, very entertaining show indeed.

New York Dolls - a major influence on the glam metal of the 80's.

Angry Somoans stunk but Surf Punks and the Meatmen were awesome. Also saw PIL with SugerCubes and Brian Ferry. Mostly rode the new wave and old reggae though. Thanks Ron. Mike

You gotta wonder about teh New Ypork Dolls, Iggy and Lou Reed. I mean they have all recently put out new albums. You would have thought most of tehm would have been dead by now. Perhaps heroin, cocaine and staying up late each night are actullay good for you health. I mean Iggy does not have an ounce of fat on him. How many 60 year olds can say that?
