Golden chersonese miniatures (1 Viewer)

For Series B, I adopted a different approach by focusing on the formal hierarchy as can be seen in the formalised court dress and customs of the various palaces. I was also inspired by a British Museum booklet which showcased the Raffles gamelan orchestra. These unique musical instruments are correctly depicted here.

The various kings and their court are also represented here in some detail. The painting of the various colourful sarong cloth follow specific rules on formal wear.

Finally, the whole Indonesian culture (series A and B) is linked by the representation of shadow puppets. These puppets were specially designed by me and engraved on brass sheets as a special order with a microelectronics firm. Like I said, this was an artistic endeavour.

These last few pages highlight the diversity and complexity of the sets. Each set forms a functioning set as it is, or as the basis for further elaboration.

Victor,

thanks so much for putting these pages back up 'on-line' again. as well as wonderful background information about the music and culture of these diverse groups on the islands that make up modern Indonesia, they display you wonderful work in recreation of that culture in miniature.

I really think that they should be displayed at least in some museum of local history of this region, such as your own Asian Civilisations Museum in Singapore, so that they could be viewed and appreciated by all. Website https://www.nhb.gov.sg/acm/

This is place that I have visited on past visits to the 'Lion City' and hope to get to again, in the near future.

Thanks,
John

Hi John

Thanks for yr generous remarks about GCM. The ACM showcases historical artefacts. I did tk abt it but never got round to approaching them. GCM is really all about stylised representations in miniature based on niche historical research, using toy soldiers as the medium.

Below is an example of a musical instrument known as a ceng ceng. Two half cylindrical bells are sounded with a couple of hand held clappers to make a musical ringing sound ceng ceng. Usually mounted on ducks or frogs carvings. Originally ptd in a simpler style, I liked the actual photo of one of the prototype and decided to upgrade the ptg of the casting in later productions.
Each ceng ceng is made from a stand, two ducks and two clappers. 5 castings!

I share some revived web pages where GCM was featured in other publications.

Series C was initially planned to be about Tibet and Central Asia.
Series D was supposed to be about Tippoo Sultan and his Court.
Various circumstances didn’t allow me to issue them as such and hence, Series C was about the Nguyen Dynasty of Vietnam and Series D was about the Qing Dynasty Court. Both series were initiated with an emperor figure on a throne. A rather complex production piece.

Series E Goroka is probably the most unusual range ever devised. It offers several distinctive tribal costumes with feather head sets represented in sheet metal.

The sections are Color coded for easy reference according to the series.
