The good old GST, the Australian Government has announced that as from 1/07/2016 all imported goods will be subject to a 10% tax, which previously only applied for goods worth more than $1000. Effectively this means the cost of a TS could/should rise and coupled with the low exchange rate, suggests the Australian market for our hobby will cool some what. Looking back, the golden years are starting to fade. It is possible some of the retailer overseas who will be charged with the responsibility of collecting the tax, may absorb it, who knows. Feel we are now in the same boat as many others around this world trying to budget for this ever increasing expensive hobby, but that said, it's still a fantastic hobby. Robin.

Won't be buying anything for a while mate, loosing 30 cents in the dollar is ridiculous and once the new tax comes in I will be buying very little slowing getting priced out of the hobby unfortunately.

The details are vague on this at this time. I saw comments that the overseas seller would have to sell more than $75 000 worth of sales to Australia before the GST would apply.

So not sure exactly how it will work.

Scott

Hopefully the exchange rate my rise next year back perhaps to the 80cents area, doubt we will see a $1.10 ever again. As you know the higher the exchange rate, which is good for our hobby, is bad for our exporters, so the Government prefers lower, some predict 50/60 level, which would the cost a figure would be $100. That would force me to be very fussy on what I bought and slow me up big time. Robin.

Yes, I'd have to agree with you Wayne... but how does that effect out local shops? They have to pay the GST, while overseas purchases don't.

We can't do much about the declining value of $AUS, but there is always the ballot box with regard to the increase in taxation !!!

Agree mate my vote will revolve around my collection don't you worry ^&grin

Sounds like our friends down under need to get a grasp on their local government / Politicians and put a stop to this ruckus.

Just doesn't seem fair at all to the "Average Joe" !

It's all very confusing, cannot see overseas companies registering for GST to collect our taxes. it does appear the start date might be 01/07/2017, so a lot could happen in the meantime, so i guess not worried at the moment. Robin.

Yeah, I agree with Wayne and Robin, the 10% GST on all goods purchased overseas is going to severely restrict what I can buy in the future as well. It's hard enough as it is to keep buying stuff with the Oz dollar falling and it may get even worse as there are predictions that the Aussie dollar may fall to around 60 to 65 cents against the US dollar! Hopefully when this tax kicks in in just under 2 years time the Oz dollar might have risen a bit but then the price of Toy Soldiers probably would have gone up as well!

No use punishing the current Govt for bringing this in as the other mob probably would have introduced it as well. Besides, it was agreed upon by all state Govt's which are Labor and Liberal.

In Canada the GST is charged by Canada Customs when it crosses the border into Canada and collected by Canada Post when the parcel is delivered. Normally GST charged by customs for parcels over $100 in value. There is no attempt to get the seller to collect GST which is unworkable.

Sorry Wayne and John(Obee) but I agree with Tom on this-changing the party in Government won't change this decision. The Liberals(Conservatives in Australia) will say they are protecting local retailers and small business and the ALP will say they are protecting local jobs, whereas both of them are after the extra revenue. As for the Australian Dollar,as long as this country depends on exporting minerals and primary products for it's main source of income(like forever),and continues to import finished goods and value added products(like forever and ever)then the AUD will be at the mercy of international commodity markets and will bounce around. At the turn of the century(2001) the AUD was only worth 52 cents US and this morning was worth 71.2 cents, yet only five years ago it was at parity and beyond.
