Hello,

Just wondering if anyone knew of toy soldier sets based on books; I know of Britain's Pride and Prejudice and Tommy Atkins' Oliver Twist, and have seen Sherlock Holmes.

I ask because I was amazed how much the toy soldiers helped me understand Pride and Prejudice, on which I had made no progress for years.

Thank all of you in any event!

Off the top of my head - there are numerous King Arthur sets, TedToy has some Huckleberry Finn/Tom Sawyer sets, Wm. Hocker has a Mark Twain set

Thank you!

I've seen Three Musketeers sets as well. The novel The Club Dumas, remade into the movie The Ninth Gate, stated that book collectors have a special love for The Three Musketeers. I never tracked down if that's true, or if true, why.

I'll be going through your leads with great pleasure for some time--thank you!

Here is a great new Three Musketeers set - not released yet, but coming soon! It's made by First Legion, LTD

Of course K&C's World of Dickens.......JJD's French and Indian Wars complements Cooper's "Last of the Mohicans" and their Spanish Civil War range can illustrate Hemingway's "For Whom the Bell Tolls"....

Tradition issued sets depicting Sharpe and other characters from Cornwell's novels. They also issued a set based on "The Steadfast Tin Soldier", complete with the hero with only one leg, and the object of his desire, the ballerina.

For those who paint their own, Imrie-Risley has long offered a series of Sherlock Holmes figures, and a series Dickens characters from "A Christmas Carol".

Prost!

Not a "book"...However a 'Play' _The Lovers_ written by Leslie Stevens was performed in New York, in 1956.
Cast included Joanne Woodward, Darren McGavin and Pernell Roberts.
Later turned into a movie, _The War Lord_ starring Charlton Heston, Richard Boone and Guy Stockwell.
Conte Collectibles made a number of figures and buildings from the story.

This was another great suggestion--thank you, brother!

I couldn't believe my eyes reading about the movie/play.

On a smaller scale don't forget Asterix!

Thank you, Scott!

I know the importance of Asterix. This may be the way to learn a foreign language, and Asterix is perfect for French.

I told people I had read Pride and Prejudice (my last name is the same as one of the characters), but I hadn't. Then, I get W. Britain's figures/building, and I rocket through the book.

I apologize if I'm misusing the term Montessori.

Thanks again to everyone.

Just pick up almost ANY of Britains old hollowcast figures - and chances are, there will have been a book about them.

Waterloo? - they are there. Agincourt, Crecy, etcetera - they are there. The Three Feathers or War on the Nile - they are all there.

You could almost name any book involving warfare - and pick up an old Britains figure to represent it. jb

Yes!

The one I was seeking most was War and Peace; the one W. Britain set I have is at the center of my home.

For some reason, I was also seeking Sound and the Fury (that would be a wild set), and the Brothers Karamazov. I'll have to consult my Montessori friends on how to tackle Dostoyevsky. :)
