Davis Cup - Murray shows amazing sportsmanship at moment of personal triumph
Few individuals have ever enjoyed such a huge impact on a team triumph than Andy Murray did in Great Britain’s Davis Cup victory. By Tom Adams
Murray was supreme throughout the campaign, going undefeated to win 11 points – the final one of which secured glory in Ghent when he saw off David Goffin in straight sets to bring the Davis Cup to Britain for the first time in 79 years.
The final point was perfect: Murray produced one of the shots of the final to lob Goffin and send the Scot collapsing to the clay as he was overcome by emotion.
The British team charged over to envelop him in a sea of red as Murray was rightly celebrated as the talisman behind one fo the great British sporting triumphs.
And yet, just at one of his most well-deserved moments of personal triumph, Murray suddenly broke the spell of delirium.
The Scot escaped the clutches of his colleagues and sought out Goffin and the defeated Belgians to offer his condolences.
A classy moment from a true British sporting hero.
