My first brush with baseball was in '75 when I was 10 and the Red Sox were in the world series. Fred Lynn was my favorite player. Most of the '75 sox were gone in a few years and though I still had my loyalty to Boston, I became a fan of the expansion and underdog Blue Jays.
I think Williams was the best player, overall, of all time. Even with his years of military service, he still put up good numbers.

Hi Guys,

As a really solid Yankee Fan for the past 40 odd years I could rattle off a ton of players who have worn pinstripes and were among the best in the game but I wont because I think this question is deeper than just the on field player thats why I find it interesting that no one has mentioned one player who in my opinion is one of the real giants of the game. Cal Ripken Jr.

I think he is without a doubt one of the best players to walk out of a dugout in my life time. I think he is the sort of player every kid should aspire to be a Solid player, Team player and a Gentleman off field and of course the kind of guy who has always given back to his community. I have several friends and relatives who have met him and they all say the same thing he is the genuine article. So I give you Cal Ripken Jr to consider.

Absolutely - I agree. I would definitely name him in my top 5 of "my" era watching baseball. One of the few guys who wasn't on one of "my two teams" that I kept every single baseball card of because I loved the way he played the game.

AMEN to that!! in my lifetime, no doubt Cal Ripken Jr. was the man, the numbers he put up besides the consecutive game streak are sometimes over looked plus the gold gloves he won, all star games, I could go on and on, I think the biggest downside of his was only one world series title, and most if not all players are judged by how many major titles thet have won....Sammy

Greatest of my time has to be Tony Gwynn for hitters and Greg Maddux for pitchers.

Of all time, well to many to even go there, but I do lean towards Ty Cobb and Walter Johnson
