Just watched this episode and love this show! Was really interesting to see how the hugely outnumbered German AFV's managed heroics in holding up overwhelming numbers of Russian Tanks and how the training of these Stug and Tiger crews helped slow the Russians in places even though in the bigger picture the Reich was doomed. the instances of two Stugs destroying and holding up far superior numbers of T34's was both brave and fascinating. And the incident in which Otto Carius in his Tiger and with another in tow charged into a Russian Town at top speed and surprised around twenty JS2's and with speed of gunnery destroyed evry single one of them. Astounding skill and bravery.

I thought it was quite easy to find WW1 relics in the fields of France and Belgium, but two reporters from the show were shown searching the woods and just stumbling across the side armour of a T34. Finally there was also excellent film of the recovery of a perfectly intact T34 complete with German markings on the turret, it looked like it had just gone in there! Great show.

I watched the show also. Remarkable what they are finding in lakes and other off the beaten tracks in russia Quality over quantity really paid off for the germans in the east. The stug crews were the backbone of the german forces for a number of years and without them I am sure it could be argued the war would have been over earlier.

Mitch ,

They were able to start & drive the captured T34 after pulling it out from the lake...I have been watching these shows as of late...Some incredible acts of bravery & daring by the german armoured forces...

joe..

Thats some feat after being submerged in water and mud for that long. I still don't think we fully understand the ferocity of the eastern campaign

I've also started watching 'Soviet Storm' which is another pretty lightweight but enjoyable series, again featuring computer generated graphics and maps etc , by no means in depth but still as I say enjoyable.

Rob..

I have them on the sky plus recorded but, not found time to watch. I did watch the new seconds from disaster about the bismarck but, that was not very good. hope these are better

Hey Rob-

yeah this series is a lot of fun. I thought the WW2 stuff would pretty much be a rehash, which it is, but it's actually pretty energetic and visually appealing so I watch. I'm more in tuned with the modern stuff- 73 easting and I think they are going to touch on the Arab Israeli conflict- gives the viewer a fresh perspective of some different conflicts.

I am hoping they tackle Cambrai- I know I'd be all over that!! Bet you would too mate.

Regarding retrieval of Soviet Armor- I posted some links when I first joined- youtube has all sorts of videos of guys yanking stugs, T34's etc even some Me109" (I think) out of lakes all over Russia- really cool stuff.

Guys, have today watched five eps of this back to back (my back is bad today so the wife has excused me front line combat^&grin) and really enjoying it, great graphics and maps and some very interesting explanation of both major and small local actions, very enjoyable indeed. The sheer scale, ferocity and sacrifice of these two mighty armies is staggering, I must say it does bring into context just what the Russians did and on what scale. Everytime I see one of these I start thinking about getting a second T34 :wink2: (Chris, as you say, bring on a Cambrai version{bravo}})

Cheers

Yes that is very poor it has to be said. Apart from that I'm just loving this series. Have just watched the Bulge episode and really enjoyed it, as usual its the accounts from the veterans themselves that is the best thing. The story of the Sherman crewman in his Tank that is ambushed by a Panther who misses him with his first shot, he shoots down a side road and is confronted by two officers with Panzerfausts, who also miss, he finally puts a shell among them killing them all apart from the young Soldier surrendering minus his hands following the explosion. {eek3} What I also like about the graphics is that they show you the action with computer generated effects which then fade out to show you the actual place (as it is today) they are describing. Brings it to life very nicely.

Rob..

Thats the one I watched and commented upon. They were lucky to be missed by a panther and a panzerfaust mind, looked like the veterans were influenced by the historians as they talked about jagdtigers instead of jagdpanzers. Some of the graphics are good and remind me of the PS2 game tank battle which was a great game
