I think one common perception of Brits here in the US...is that they are perceived as refined, cultured and dignified...
Michael,
I'd like to corially invite you to the next 12.30 Brit Pack meet at The London Show, as I believe we can dispell this perception within about 30 seconds, 20 seconds if Rob avoids swinging from the light fittings whilst making chimp noises.
Agree with the comments and your summary in so much as generally, Britain has become a fairly multi national community and there is general acceptance of all nations and backgrounds.
As for our extreme hooligan element ('ours' only because they share the same land), as Scott says, yes it goes on, although it should be recognised that this extreme level stuff is very much in the minority. And in reality, has naff all to do with football - this is just an excuse to meet up and get bloody.
The vast majority of football supporters, are just that. They go to games, get narked off by poor ref decisions (who doesn't), enjoy the game and support their teams. A small minority prefer to get tanked up before the game with a view to having scraps with opposing like minded groups if the oportunity presents itself, and then there are the extremes, who these films are about. But it doesn't happen like that as often as the films portray, and the majority of matches pass with little or no bother.
