For WW1 we have decided to include our wooden warbirds within the main newsletter, we kind of figured you might be getting too much of a good thing so have tried to slim the newsletters down this month. Next month will probably see all the aeroplanes come out in 1 letter and the figures separately, but this month its all a little different! WOW131 The Hansa was a monoplane variant of the W.12 biplane, however it offered less drag and greater speed than its predecessor due to its monoplane configuration. Designed by Ernst Heinkel the W.29 saw action in the closing months of the war with the German Naval air wing. The Hansa was powered by a 195 HP Benz engine with exhaust stubs above and to the left of the exposed cylinder heads. Its front mounted radiator and louvres in metal panels on the side provided the cooling system. With broad wooden wings covered in lozenge pattern fabric and rigged with several degrees of dihedral rigging, this made it a strong stable fighting platform. The struts between the floats and lower wings provided more than adequate strength and the inverted rudder gave the observer a superb field of fire for his Parabellum machine gun. The pilot was also equipped with 2 forward firing machine guns which made this a deadly fighting machine. The most famous pilot to fly the Hansa was OberLt Friedrich Christiansen who along with his observer manager to significantly damage the British submarine C25, whilst it floated on the surface of the Thames Estuary. Christiansen ended the war with a tally of 13 aircraft brought down and several other shared kills. Our model comes in the marking of Friederich Christiansen and he along with his rear gunner are supplied free with this model. Limited to a total production run of 15 aircraft worldwide with a guide price of $625 which includes free postage worldwide, UK and EU customers please ask for a quote in £ as postal charges will vary depending on location. Please note the wooden Warbirds can be paid for over 3 to 6 months or upfront depending on your budget.

Moving onto WW2 we have one offering this month the Barchino motorboat which was developed for the Italian navy during WW2. These were a series of small motor boats designed to carry 330 kilos of explosives in the front of the boat and were intended to be rammed into their opponents at high speed. The boats had a length of 5.62 metres and a beam of 1.62 metres, they were powered by a 95 HP Alfa Romeo outboard motor and had a maximum speed of 33 knots. Barchino were designed to be launched from a surface ship near the target area and make a silent run to within 200 metres of the target, it was then that the pilot would set a collision course and run on full gear the final 200 metres or so to the target. Unlike the Japanese Shinvo motorboats, Barchino were not designed as suicide craft and the pilots were able to eject using a crude ejector seat that also acted as a raft. The Barchino were first deployed in March 1941 and were used in a night attack on Crete harbour, where the British Cruiser HMS York, the Norwegian tanker Pericles and two other ships were all hit by Barchino. All the Italian pilots ejected safely and were captured by the Allied forces defending Crete. Another raid took place in Malta but with not as much success as the Crete operation. With the invasion of the USSR in 1941 Barchino were deployed to the Black sea and used in minor operations against the Russians. After the war the Israeli’s used an improved version of the Barchino against the Egyptian Navy in 1948 with some success sinking or damaging 2 vessels during 1 operation. However unlike the Italians the Israeli’s kept a boat in reserve which was used to pick up the boat pilots and transport them back to safety in Israel. Our version of the Barchino comes with a German sailor acting as a sentry (A version with helmet and B version with soft Matelot hat) and is priced at $150/£99 with a limited run of 50 of the A and 50 of the B version being available.

That’s’ all for this month folks I hope you enjoyed reading our news. All these models will appear on our website www.tomgunn.co.uk and can be purchased from us or from a dealer near you.

Next month will see the release of our WW2 Japanese figures seen at the June London show, some new Persians, a Marius Mule type Legionnaire and of course a few more Spartans with 1 or 2 other surprises!

Best wishes

The Gunn Team

ROM004B Repel Cavalry (Remake) As this item has long sold out we have now remade it for those of you who wish to add to your rank and file and also for those who missed out on the first one. We have altered the right leg so there is a definite bend which was hard to see on the first issue and have also added a water bottle and satchel to the left side of each figure. Priced at $95/£75, we have made the normal 3 versions with the red shield (serial number ROM004B A) variant being unlimited so long as demand is there and the 9th (serial number ROM004B B) and 30th (serial number ROM004B C) Black shield variants being limited to 50 sets worldwide.

ROM048 Roman War Elephant: The Roman War elephant evokes powerful images of some of the most legendary battles of western civilization and the Roman Legions were the power behind one of the longest lasting empires in human history. The Roman War Machine adhered to discipline and tradition, their secret for longevity was their depth and adaptability. Whilst the Roman Legions were occasionally defeated, the Roman Republic and later the Roman Empire’s ability to muster new legions and deploy them quickly through their areas of influence meant that for hundreds of years the empire might lose a battle but would almost always win the war. The ability to learn from their defeats and adapt was another strength of the Roman military machine. In 255 B.C the Carthaginian military used war elephants very effectively. The Carthaginians, led by Xanthippus, attacked the centre of the Roman lines with war elephants. The Romans fought bravely but survivors of the elephant attack could not withstand the follow-on attack by the Carthaginian infantry. More than 80% percent of the Roman Army that marched in battle that day would be killed or captured by sunset. One of the most devastating losses in the entire saga of Ancient Rome. However Rome did not buckle or fail even with losses of this magnitude, instead they developed new tactics to defeat war elephants’ charges in the future. In the 2nd century B.C the armies of Rome added the war elephant to the their arsenal. In the battle of Cynoscephalae and Magnesia, War elephants provided another powerful offensive tool for the already formidable Roman forces. By the time of Julius Caesar, knowledge of effective tactics against war elephants had become widespread and their use in battle became less common. The legend of mighty war elephants echoes through the ages, few images of classic era warfare strike such a chord of primal fear as a war elephant. Our first variant comes with a Mahout and an archer firing downwards, both come loose and can be fitted where desired.

For those of you who are not buying an elephant this month we are hoping we can tempt you with a Testudo or the beginnings of one which can be built up over the following months. The Testudo was a formation where the legionnaires would align their shields to form a packed formation resembling a Tortoise. The men of the front rank would hold their shields from the height of their shins to their eyes , so as to cover the formation’s front. The men in the back ranks would place their shields over their heads to protect the formation from above, balancing the shields on their helmets, if necessary. The Legionnaires on the sides and rear of the formation would stand sideways or even backwards with shields held the same as the front row to present an all-round defence. Although this was a great defensive formation that was useful in all kinds of scenarios, it was extremely difficult to move as one and a Testudo only covered ground very slowly once on the move. Our Testudo is one in the stationary defensive mode and we will be adding various other figures to enhance it throughout the coming months.

ROM064: Front rank with Pilum extended

ROM065: Outer right hand side of formation

ROM066: Outer left hand side of formation

ROM067: Shield held overhead

In the pictures attached you would require 3 x ROM064 for the front rank, 2 x ROM065, 2 X ROM066, and 8 x ROM067 to make up a 15 man formation. You can increase or decrease as you see fit depending on the size of testudo required.

All our Testudo figures will be the normal price of $49 per figure, however if you buy 14 figures from us we will offer you the 15th figure (which will be a ROM067) for free. The Testudo will be available in the normal 3 versions although we only have a limited number of these sets here at present, our main batch will arrive next month. This will be an ongoing project as we said earlier and we will keep making the testudo in all formats so long as demand is there. This item can be paid for over 3 -6 month instalments if required, just drop us an email for details.

ROM080 Roman Auxiliary archer firing downwards. Useful for those of you who have a tower or fort and require some defenders for it. Priced at $49/£39 and available now, please note the base on these figures is the same shape and style as our normal Roman figures and is not rectangular as per the photos.

The Romans seems to be a series that has plenty of legs left in it and it will not be long before the Onager, Scorpion and various other personality figures make an appearance. Watch out for news of exciting new figures as and when we announce.

Dear All

Welcome from a very warm United Kingdom on the eve of the Summer Solstice, nice to have some real sunshine even if it will only be for a few days! This is something of a large release with lots of pictures for which I do apologise for but then I know you would hate to miss out on anything so I have included everything! OK so lets start with the Spartans and we have to mention Larry Allen here who gave a great amount of support with regards to our Spartan archers and their equipment, I am not sure they would have been anywhere near as good or as accurate without his input:

SPA010 Spartan Warrior with shield slung on back prepares to thrust his Dory, comes in 3 versions with A version sporting traditional Spartan Lambda symbol. The second version (labelled SPA010 i) features an attractive 3 headed lion design whilst the third version (labelled SPA010 J) sports some stunning looking Medusa artwork on the shield. The A version is unlimited so long as demand is there, the B and C versions are limited to 75 pieces worldwide, all variants priced at $55/£45.

SPA011 comprises a Spartan archer in the kneeling position as he prepares to let loose a volley of arrows at the enemy, available in 1 version only, priced at $55/£45 and limited to 150 pieces worldwide.

SPA013 features a new Ally for the Spartans in the form of a Locrian warrior with a beautifully decorated twin plumed helmet. The Locrians were residents of the southern/central part of Greece with Ajax the lesser being one of their most famous sons, leading 40 warships in the Trojan war. With the coming of the Persians the Locrians sided with the Spartans and sent their whole army unlike most of the Greek states who only sent nominal contingents. Our first Locrian is an archer in the standing position as he prepares to loose an arrow at the enemy. Available in 1 version only and priced at $55/£45 per figure, limited to 150 pieces worldwide.

Please note that we have a limited supply of the red 4 wing shields (picture attached) and will supply one of these shields FREE with every SPA011/13 archer sold direct to Gunn Club members.

SPA015 Leonidas king of the Spartans shouts orders to his men in a desperate last stand defence against the Persians. Leonidas was the fabled king of Sparta who made a last stand defence at the gates of Thermopylae with 300 of his warriors, they held off the Persians for a week reputedly killing over 10,000 of the enemy in process. However after being betrayed by Ephialtes who showed the Persians a mountain pass that would allow them to outflank the Spartans, Leonidas died and passed into immortality with his men. Alongside the Spartans were 700 Thespians who also refused to surrender and chose to stay with their Spartan allies. Leonida comes in 2 versions, an A version with ornately decorated Lambda shield and a B version (limited to 75 pieces) with traditional bronze Lambda shield, both priced at $55/£45 per figure.

Plenty more Spartans, Locrians, Thespians, a very fine looking Xerxes and last but not least some Persian Immortals to follow later this year.

Following on from the Spartans we have some new Romans with details below:

ROM037 Dead Auxiliary Archer, the A version comes with a silver helmet and an arrow in the eye and leg, the B version comes with a bronze helmet but only 1 arrow this time in the eye, however both are still the same price at $49/£39! Both sets limited to 75 pieces each version.

The Hansa W-29 looks brilliant. Gorgeous job by TGM on this famous aircraft and it looks particularly well painted with the lozenge camo. It will make a very attractive dio with the two crew members. Another outstanding aircraft that TGM have come up with. -- Al
