Tomorrow morning, our old friend Halomeeps (Ed Pijuan), a Green Beret who did a tour in Afghanistan, will be arriving at my house to tour the museum. Afterwards, I am taking him and his son to the Yankee game. I will do my best to take pictures and pass them along to Brad to post for me.

Toy Soldiers and the New York yankees.....................Can kit get any better ?

Guys, I had the best experience I have ever had at Yankee stadium today with Ed, his son, and my friend Maureen. I will be e-mailing a bunch of photos to Brad for him to post, but let me fill you in on what we did today.

Ed and his son arrived at the house this morning at 9:30 a.m. We had a nice breakfast waiting for them. I let them eat in the museum, so they could maximize their viewing time (something I've never done before, but it was fine, no disasters). Ed presented me with an Afghani war rug (there was also one for Hans and one for Larry) as well as a "Wounded Warriors" Calendar. After two hours of viewing (and plenty of photography) we drove to the Bronx. Upon our arrival, the first nice surprise of the day - it was a giveaway day, everyone under 14 got a Yankee Stadium Lunchbox, so Ed's son got a nice free souvenier.

Our seats were nothing to write home about, but the best I could get considering it was the last weekend game of the summer and a sellout. However, we were in the front row of the bleachers overlooking both the bullpen and monument park, so our distant view of the game was more than made up for by interaction with the bullpen, including the great Mariano Rivera. The game was a Yankee blowout, so all was well, but the best was yet to come . . .

The NYPD police officer assigned to our section, Sergeant Grayson, started chatting with Ed, who, upon his return from a tour as a Green Beret in Afghanistan, became a Miami Police Sergeant. Sergeant Grayson, as a courtesy to a veteran and fellow police officer, arranged for a private tour of Monument Park after the game! Not only were we provided private access to Monument Park, but, as the gates to the field had been opened, we actually got to step right up to the warning track and take some photos of the field. It was amazing, standing on the warning track in Center Field's "death valley", then standing right next to the monument to my Idol, Henry Louis "Lou" Gehrig, "the Iron Horse" and getting my photo taken. What an amazing day!! And to think I thought I was doing a nice thing for Ed and his son, it turned out Ed gave me a dream experience at Yankee Stadium! The photos of our adventures will go out to Brad this evening.:cool::cool::cool:

Great story, Louis - other than the shellacking of my Royals but my second fave team (Red Sox) have done okay the last few years so I can't complain too much, really.:D I simply try to remember the late 70's and early 80's when we were the true rivals to the Yanks and hope the day will come again!

Cheers to you for your generosity to a fellow forum member and gent who served his country.

Eric

I sent Brad 7 photos of Ed visiting the museum, and 28 photos of our adventure at Yankee Stadium. Hopefully Brad will find the time to post them for me.:D

The first six photos Brad posted depict:

1. Ed, his son Chris and my friend Maureen in our seats at the Yankee game.
2. Ed taking a shot of me with the gang in our seats. Chris is holding up the Yankee Stadium Lunchbox they were giving out to kids 14 and under at the game.
3. Our view of Yankee Stadium from the bleachers behind the Yankee bullpen and monument park.
4. A view of Monument Park from our seats - little did I know when I took this picture that later today I would get the opportunity to stand on this hallowed ground.
5. The countdown clock . . . during the game Jerry and Ben Stiller pulled the lever that changed this clock to 16 games left at Yankee Stadium.
6. The great Mariano Rivera entering the bullpen.

What could be more fun then a Sunday at Yankee Stadium:D
