Rev

As you have had the Old boys view on AWI here is a young mans! with young children:D

I amfraid to say in my education it was ZERO and in my childs history it is ZERO there was and is no talk of AWI. However do not feel that this is an issue (and Shannon Pete and Brad) not going off on one here......but (just one quick point please)

Good history education has gone down the drain in England. Ask my son who Oliver Crom was (no idea) Who Wellington was (no idea) who Nelson was he knew as we lived in Portsmouth and i shoved this history down his throat. Why is you may be asking..... (or may not) History lessons in UK are Romans, Normans Tudors and Victorian......No battles or conflicts exsisted though!
No WWI and no WWII education!
Well it is because the UK goverment has become to bloody PC and now they have to learn about other countries religons etc and it is filling up the curriculum also to talk about ones British History is to be seen to be biased to the British kids in the school!! funny that ina British School.

I raise my glass at your 4th July independance etc......does the whole of USA celebrate? Dam right it does. How can you guys be proud of it when we cannot celebrate being British or worse still English without people thinking we are thugs! in the UK everyone parties on St Patricks day, St Andrews Day and St Davids day oooooh but not the done thing on St George's day!!!

Imagine if we had a Britain is great day!! (it gets disguised as other celbrations etc) and believe it or not they tried to boycotte VE day here!

You all make sure you go out and be proud of your country america is made up of the good people and 99% of the time normal people, with balanced views. Make sure you raise a glass for us Brits.

By the way Ron.............We let you have the States!!! Jjjjjjjjjjooke:D

Ohhhhh say..........

in fact i am goingto crack opena new bottle of Jim Beam 2nite!

Master Tony makes some good points here. There is no doubt the PC Brigade are in overdrive lately, they even wanted us to change the names of Waterloo station and Trafalgar square so as not to upset the French!.However, fortunately the idea was rejected out of hand with the traditional British two finger salute!.I think the teaching of History varies greatly across the country. At the museum in the last 2-3yrs there has been a huge increase in the number of school parties coming to learn about the two world wars and its heartening to see.We do our best to make them proud of their country and send them away with hopefully a germ of interest that may grow.

Tony is of course right about St Georges day,we are made to feel almost ashamed if we want to celebrate it and made to feel your some sort of far right Nationalist if you do.HOWEVER:) (and this makes me smile)there is a i believe a steadily growing, determined and vocal backlash against this.In that great British tradition people are starting to say ENOUGH!!!!.And celebrating it as they want. The British people i believe will only take so much BS before they 'rise up'!.

We always fly the flag on ST G day and to hell with whoever doesn't like it.I think more and more people are feeling like this.

What makes me so angry is this.Last year a reporter for one of our national papers started a campaign to try and get the wearing of the Poppy and rememberance day dropped because its time to 'forget and move on' .I was sooooo proud of my country when almost as one they rose up and said 'GET STUFFED'!!!!!:D:D

I'm still mighty proud to be English!

Tony,

I don't want to get up on a soapbox here, but that's why our hobby is so important. We have to educate our children as to history, and our collections are a great way to make it interesting. My cousin's 10 year old son Michael came over to the museum the other day, his eyes got huge, and he started asking questions about everything. About two hours later, he now knew what WWII, Vietnam, the Civil War and Ancient Rome were. He learned more history in an afternoon (and from a subsequent phone conversation we had retained it) than he had in several years of school.

And that just the age to get them interested Louis.I was about 9 when i first started learning about the two wars and have been hooked since.I have boys and Girls of that age come up to me and point out a Spitfire and say 'That won the Battle of Britain didn't it'!.The interest is there we just have to nurture and encourage it,it will then grow of its own accord. As we have all said many times we must never forget, and its our job to pass that on to the kids of today.Right i'll jump down from my soapbox, pour myself a drop of Famous Grouse and toast my American Family and all my American treefrog Friends.

Heres to you,To your Freedom,to Peace and your wonderful Cheesecake factory!:D

You English should get off your butts. Scrap those arbitrary bank holidays and introduce public holidays on Trafalagr Day, Battle of Britain Day, St Crispins Day, St George's Day and Empire Day. Before those stupid Nationalists took us out of the Commonwealth in 1961 our national anthem was God Save the King and The call of SA. Reintroduce those holidays and have some bloody pride in things.
Sorry for the rant
Regards
Damian

No i think your right mate.Trafalgar,Battle of Britain,Waterloo and rememberance day should all be holidays. They do say within a year or two we shall get St Georges day off and about time!.
