Happy Independence Day (1 Viewer)

Once again this year my reenacting unit was asked to help out with the fireworks demonstration at the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford Va. We arrived with a 3" Ordnance Rifle and added a few insignificant sparkles to an excellent fireworks display. We got a chance to visit the memorial after it closed and before the fireworks got started.

The monument reminds me of the Korean War Memorial in Washington. I like the realistic monuments that show the weapons and uniforms of the war being honored. Some modern monuments look like bronzed store dummies without any sense that a monument is "art." I believe that we get a lot of historical information about past armies from their culture's monuments. This monument in Virginia seems to satisfy both art and information. Thank you for the photos.

Excellent comment Scott. I think you really hit it on the head. That is something that impresses me about the statues there. They really capture the feeling. Here is a few more shots;

These compare favorably with the monuments from the American Civil War. Artist tastes changed in the 20th Century but the iconic Iwo Jima Memorial is a great example as it's "authenic" and the poses luckily artistacally good from the photo.

I don't have a problem with abstract monuments. Maybe it's being a "buff" of old uniforms that makes me grateful past societies depicted their troops realistically.

I have to make a pigrimage south to see the "new" WW II monument in DC and now the D-Day monument.
