It depends on the style in which you painted them. If you painted them in a traditional toy soldier style, and you want a gloss finish, then I would use Future acrylic floor polish, now called Johnson's Pledge with FUTURE shine. You can get it at most grocery stores, discount department stores, hardware stores-wherever cleaning supplies are sold. It can be applied by hand or with an airbrush.
If you painted them to look as authentic as possible, as historical miniatures, then you'll probably want a matte finish. I use Testor's DullCote matte lacquer, which is available at almost any hobby or craft store. I use that on my scale models, and on figures that I finish in a connoisseur style, that is, to be as realistic as I can make them.
As a followup about Future, Matt Swan, who is a scale modeler and maintains a website called Swanny's Models, has this page here: http://www.swannysmodels.com/TheCompleteFuture.html in which he provides the history of the product, especially the changes in product name in various countries and over time. Very helpful, since it's available in many countries, and, because one bottle can last you long enough that Johnson's'll merge with another company in the meantime and change the product name again. But the formula is the same.
