I have heard tell, that in all the different theaters of war, the Desert War had the combatants showing most respect for each other. Not sure how true that was, though.
Maybe because Rommel was a true Warrior who fought under a gentleman’s code of war????

I have also heard the descriptions of the war in the desert as being one relatively free from atrocities. The authors generally cite:
The absence of large civilian populations in the midst of battle
The fast shifting frontline which could mean that Monday's executioneer became Tuesday's victim
The shared cultural assumptions of the combatants
