Anybody heard about a potential HBO series titled 1776? I read on another forum that HBO was, or at least had been, preparing to do a TV series based on author David McCullough's book of the same name. From the info I read, some of the same producers who made John Adams were supposed to be involved in this project. However, I can't anything about it, besides an out-of-date dummy entry at IMDB.

Personally, I think such a series would be great, as a lot of AWI films/series are not very good. I mean really, who can compare a dud like The Patriot to something as great as the John Adams series?

Well duh!! It's Mel freakin' Gibson for crying out loud! The Patriot is the Horse Soldiers of AWI movies.

If it's in the works, and it's the same production team that produced the Adams series, then it should be pretty good.

If it's not the same team, well, look for George Washington to use his kung-fu to defeat Osama bin Laden and restore King Arthur as the rightful King of England, with the help of Zorro, and with Catherine Zeta-Jones portaying Martha, not as a dowdy elder widow, but as a shapely, lithe swordswoman with ninja skills.

Oh, and Ben Franklin will use his time machine to bring back prehistoric beasts to help defeat the British. Washington's Dragoons, riding raptors.

Prost!

So Brad, I get the feeling you wouldn't be onboard for a AWI series like you described......

Seriously though, I agree that a 1776 could be a real winner if done along the lines of John Adams. I think the latter proved more popular than HBO expected.

I hope any production gets the Europeans to do the uniforms, costumes, make up, and hair. Keep those "American, the Story of Us" folks faaaaaaarrr away!

Very funny Brad!!:D But where would Paul Revere and the Raiders fit in??

To answer Noah's question , however, I haven't heard anything. I most certainly would welcome this as John Adams is one of my all time favorite series! Keep us posted with any news you may find in the future. I agree--if the same people who did JA would do 1776, then it will be a winner.

Hanks, HBO Travel to 1776
George Washington miniseries in the works.

Variety reports that Tom Hanks' Playtone production company and HBO will bring David McCullough's historical tome 1776 to the small-screen as a miniseries. The story focuses on George Washington during the American Revolution.

Talks are underway with screenwriter Kirk Ellis to join the project. Ellis wrote most of the episodes for John Adams, another Playtone/HBO mini based on a McCullough bio of a Founding Father. That project films this fall.

"The mini will be devoted to how Washington waged the war. It will explain his strategy in leading the troops and the chess game he played with the British. He was vastly outmanned, but luck, courage and character drove Washington and his troops to vanquish the Brits," according to Variety.

An article about 1776 and some excerpts from the book can be found here.

Note the date though May 20th 2005

1776 Coming to HBO
With the success of their first miniseries on the life of John Adams, Tom Hanks, HBO, and David McCullough are slated to begin yet another collaboration. McCullough's book, 1776, which deals with the struggles Washington and the Continental Army faced during the first year of the war, is said to be the latest HBO project in the works. A spokesmen for HBO and Playtone had the following press release:

The pay channel and Tom Hanks & Gary Goetzman's Playtone banner are set to team for a new multi-part mini-series based on David McCullough's recently published book "1776." Said project, which Hanks and Goetzman will executive produce, will track George Washington's military campaign against the British. The news marks HBO and Playtone's second small screen adaptation of a McCullough novel, the first being the upcoming 11-hour project "John Adams." Kirk Ellis, who spearheaded "Adams" (writing nine of the 11 hours), is understood to be in talks to do the same for "1776." Production on "Adams" is set to begin in the fall while no timetable was given for "1776."

In light of the success of Band of Brothers and John Adams, this film is likely to continue HBO's trend for success in historical miniseries.

Heres another article i found.

So, correct me if I am wrong, but it sounds like the studio has considered it, but hasn't really started the project. That seems to be an accurate summary.
