Starting tonight on HBO is a 7 part series based on the invasion of Iraq. Looks to be a good mini series.
Hopefully this will be much better that that FX series about Iraq a few years ago, can,t recall the name, but that one was pretty bad.

Will be watching this one as well, I have heard very good things about it. From what I have read, it will focus more on the actual combat and less on storytelling, the main objective of the series is to give the viewer a realistic view of combat, we'll see as we've heard all of this before.....

What did you think?
I liked it, but just as for BOB, all the charectors seem to look a like at first viewing.
Could be my age catching up with me but some of the dialog was hard to understand.
Overall looks to be a great series.
If you have watched the old HBO "OZ" series, I just can,t get it out of my mind the actor who plays the correspondent in Generation Kill is the same one in Oz who played, well you know where I,m coming from!

Gary,
I know who you mean, the guy from OZ (Tobias Beecher). I found that if I turn on my tv's closed captioning I could follow the dialog much better. Seems to be getting off to a good start and it may have some interesting twists and turns coming up. I will be infront of the set on Sunday next.

Is this based on the book "Generation Kill" by Evan Wright?

If it is I found that to be an enlightening read.

That's correct. Set my expecatations pretty low so it will be hard to disappoint. Not bad at all really- couple minor issues but otherwise really good. That Marine that is running around in his protective mask at a full sprint- that boy ain't right!! :D That takes some immense lung power.

The first episode was pretty good. Like Chris, I had some minor issues with it but it wasn't some Hollywood bs like "Stop-Loss". The basic training episode is pretty interesting but it is only like 10 minutes long. It introduces you to some of the cast.

Wasn't aware of the series at all until I spotted this thread - cheers all for the heads up!

Caught most of the first episode online last night, overall I think it's quite good. I'll definitely catch the second episode whenever I can find it. If nothing else, it certainly seems to provide a slightly more realisitic portrayal of events in Iraq than "Over There" - wasn't too bowled over by that one!

Cheers,

Molloy.

Part 2, I don,t know, this is going to have to kick it up a notch.
I actually dozed off a few times last night watching it.
That does not bode well for a war flick.

dissapointing,,dialog trouble for sure unless its turned up to post mumble level, zero military dicipline, officers are treated with contempt or as morons,,every order or decision is questioned ,disputed, action scenes end quickly with mostly no losses or damage to u s. over emphasis on civ. collateral damage, younger soldiers are mostly concerned with a video game mentality or street urban dialog rather than anything military, I question the mostly female directed and produced versions of things, If my Bn had been anything like this I would have trying to do anything but go out the gate with this bunch, hopefully the real marine corps is nothing like this these days. perhaps a ploy to get ratings from the kids.

Very, very disappointing. As previously mentioned, I can only pick up about half of the dialog.
I too wondered when I saw that the directors were females.
The Marines must have developed some secret bullet stoping device to avoid any casulties with all that incoming fire.
We need Tom Hanks or Spielberg to direct.

I don't think it has turned out that good but why do you think a woman can't direct a series like that. Is a director disqualified because she's a woman. It has nothing to do with gender but more with the person directing.

I lost interest in the series after the third episode, what a dud.

My view is that a female viewpoint also if a non server mostly controlling a military drama,,based on HBOs credits, again female dominated ,,will have a certain slant to things, politics, etc. my view again,,based on my own experience,,not in this war but in prior times and considered a professional military in the day, I believe the troops today are done a dis service by the series. Believe me im here for the hobby not any political contest,I found parts of the program interesting and special effects like most now days first rate,

I too was not makeing a political statement or sexist comment. I was just stateing my thoughts when I saw a preview of the show that the directors were female and thought that maybe they would not have the same perspective as I would. I,m certainly not a sexist, I married a woman!

This series turned out to be very disappointing for reasons that have already been mentioned. Typical hollywood bs.

Bromhead - I have some bad news for you on today's military.

Although a few of these events have been overplayed for the drama and TV script sake - the preoccupation with Civ. Collateral Damage was and still is one of our major issues to fight effective in Iraq. If you speak with several Soldiers / Marines from Private up to Officers - they will tell you stories that would blow your mind.

Some of the issues even effected Chairman Hunter's Son - a Marine Captain - and it convinced him to run for his Dad's Seat in Congress to take on the Pentagon.

After my time with Sec. Rumsfeld - I am glad I am a Lobbyist now - so I can stop dealing with this "modern army"

I'm wondering who has read the book and how close the series is or is not to the book.
