Heading to gettysburg!!!!!!!!!!! (1 Viewer)

I am a big fan of the bus tours. They have double deckers with an open upper level. For about a 2 hour time frame, the bus will drive the entire battlefield as it chronologically happened. They have individual headphones for each rider which will pipe in the recreation of the action as you approach the actual spot of the event. I always sit on the upper deck as the unobstructed view of the battle field is hard to beat. They will stop at Little Roundtop for a 15 minute stretch your legs as well as a potty and snack break..Some will disagree, but absolutely try to see the cyclorama, but run away from the new revamped visitor center. They totally buried most of the artifacts that was a hallmark of the old place and replaced it with a " visual " experience ,guaranteed to put most historical types to sleep...Michael

So your saying that they do have them...............lol

Yes, they do have them, it was around $70 a person for 2 hours, but this back in 2007, prices may have changed. We did ours with the Artillery Ridge Campground, where they do horseback tours. Sorry, I should've been more direct :p

Are you staying in a hotel or Bed and Breakfast? If you ever get a chance, there's some nice B&B's, but may be expensive for a whole week. Every time I go, I have a few "must stops:"
-John Zabawa's Gettysburg Miniature Soldiers
-Stan Clark's stuff in the Antique Center near the Lincoln Square
-Tommy's Pizza
-Dale Gallon's Art Gallery
-Battlefield (of course :wink2:)
-Lord Nelson's Art Gallery (near Lincoln Square) (a lot of F&I War art and books)

I know there's others, but these are the ones off the top of my head.
Have fun!!

NICE, glad you're having fun! I forgot about Tarbox, nice guy, but hard to get away from if you've started a conversation with him :p There's also a huge diorama in the Gettysburg History Center on Steinwehr Ave, they moved it from artillery ridge location, you could walk to it from your hotel, I think it's like $5 to see. If I remember right, The Pub restaurant on the Lincoln square has great cream of crab soup on Saturday's, possibly another place to eat

I was in Gettysburg in April and didn't have time to see the diorama . If you visit it Bama Boy , I wouls like to hear your review of it .

I was in the Tarbox shop and concur about the proprietor's conversational skills ,( a real nice guy to talk to ) . I had to walk over "nearly " dry cement to reach his shop as the construction was everywhere .
Regards
Kirk

There is the National Civil War museum in Harrisburg. About an hour from GB. Well worth the effort. The peanut soup at the Farnsworth House (!) and their great civil war bookshop. Inside are props from the movie Gettysburg. If you drive west out of GB on route 30 you might find the marker for the first shot of the battle. In the backyard of a white house. Nice weather this week - how do you like our endless road construction? It has put half the town out of business. Ragged Edge garden for coffee...

We are thinking of going, but we are unsure about it. If we do I will let you know.

Construction is a little much.

The Wills house where Lincoln spent the night in GB has been recently renovated and opened. Article today in the local paper:

A new exhibit depicting downtown Gettysburg in 1863 was unveiled Wednesday morning at the David Wills House Museum, on Lincoln Square.

The $7.2 million museum is owned by the National Park Service, and operated by the non-profit Main Street Gettysburg through the end of the year, when it will be turned over to the park’s management and fundraising partner, the Gettysburg Foundation.

According to Gettysburg National Military Park spokeswoman Katie Lawhon, the detailed scaled-model represents the town at the time of the Civil War and the Battle of Gettysburg, fought here July 1-3, in 1863.

Gettysburg resident Dr. Bill Aldrich researched and created the model as a volunteer for the park. The model covers a four-block area of Gettysburg, around “the diamond” bordered on the east by Stratton Street, on the west by Washington Street, on the north by the railroad tracks, and on the south by Middle Street.

Aldrich started the project in October of last year, and recently completed the effort after six months of work, all as a volunteer for the park. He estimates that he spent up to seven days a week in the basement of his home putting together the 48 inch by 68.5 inch model of the historic downtown.
