Hey guys, I've got a college class on British Imperialism, in the next few months I will be working on a paper, the subject is a choice given by the professor. Here's the topic I cut and pasted:

The Boer War.
Possible arguments: (1) the Boer War broke out because Kruger and Milner had incompatible visions of the future of the Transvaal. (2) The terms of the Treaty of Vereeniging show that the Boer War was actually won by the Boers, not the British.

Is there anyone out there who is knowledgeable about this subject, and can point me in the direction of resources, namely books, that will help me write a 20-page paper on this subject?

He also said we could pick our own topic, but there has to be some sort of argument that fuels the paper. So that being said.......I was thinking something to do with the Zulu wars, anyone have any ideas for arguing a paper on this? And/or anyone have new ideas? (has to deal with British Imperialism ;) )

Thanks in advance, I thought you guys could help me out :)

Try Thomas Pakenham's "The Boer War" or Byron Farwell's book on the same subject. They are both very good one volume histories. -- Al

I might consider writing something regarding the first or second Afghan Wars for a number of reasons. The parallels and relevance of these earlier conflicts to current events in the same region are very compelling I think. Competition at that time with the Russians for control and influence over the perceived vulnerable territory of Afghanistan perched right next door to British India is also extremely interesting (you must read "The Great Game" by Peter Hopkirk). I am sure you could find something worth arguing about for 20 pages here.

Update:
Had a meeting with my professor, gonna go with argument #1, specifically the causes of the Boer War. Maybe how much Milner was just looking for a reason for a fight. Now that I've narrowed it down, any more help is appreciated.
Thanks for the info guys I appreciate it, I knew I could count on you all.
Al, you're the man, my prof. lead me in the direction of these books, thanks.
Martin, wow, that's a pretty cool website, wealth of info, thanks.
M. Dave, that sounds super interesting, I may have to do a study of the Afghan wars on my own time, when this semester is over of course ;-) thanks.
