Hi all,

I bought these two figures and just want some identification, if possible.

Figure on the left is medieval archer and the right figure is a scots WWI bagpiper.

The underside of the respective bases is
L: Longbowman Archer (with a lion rampant embossed above).
R: C. Hall - Not clear in the picture but this is scribed in.

I couldn't find anything on the medieval archer.
I checked against my New Toy Soldiers by Stuart Asquith. There is mention of a Charles Hall Production company. Is this it?

I probably will want to restore or convert them etc but won't want to destroy a valuable masterpiece.

Yeah, the piper is a Charles Hall piece, and I wouldn't touch him, I'd leave him as is.

As for the longbowman, I don't recognize the mark, but it reminds me of Franklin Mint pieces, and I wonder if this figure is from a similar manufacturer as FM. That is, I wonder if that figure is from another maker who issued various series of figures in limited runs, but which were not valuable in and of themselves in the same way that an old Britains figure would be, or Courtenay, or some other figure of significance. If I can find more about that mark, I'll post it back here. But thinking of Franklin Mint figures, I think how they were sold by other outlets as well, including as unpainted castings (eg, the figures in the "Army of Frederick the Great" were sculpted in part by Army House, and were available from AH as kits). With those kinds of figures, I'm not as leery of touching them up, or even stripping them, because the factory paint jobs weren't all that great to begin with.

Prost!

Hi Brad,

Thanks for the inputs.

The C.Hall piper is damaged. The main long pipe is missing. So I am in two minds about refurbishing it.

I'll leave the archer alone for now (a reprieve sentence) while I go about my other conversions.

Hi, Vic! Thanks for pointing out the damage on the piper. I'll modify my previous statement, to say that I could see repairing it. I had originally replied on the basis that you might strip the piece and repaint it. Given the relative rarity, from Hall's low output, I'd want to keep it as close to the original as possible. But in any case, you'll have fun with both projects, I'm sure!

Prost!

Add a little bit - The Charles Hall piece looks original painting as the eyes appear to be done correct, ie it wasn't just a casting.

The other one is a maker who is on the tip of my tongue but I can't remember who did it. Long story short, it was a kit, and from the paint, was done by a pro painter. But it is an older kit maker who is no longer in business, I just can't remember, but the base is distinctive.

Hi Brad and TD,

Thanks for more inputs. Looks like I better hold off on the hacksaw and stripper paint for these two. Ok, they can stay as they are for the time being in my collection.

Anyway, I am completely redoing my collection display to embrace all toy soldiers and miniatures, various scales and types including flats. This variety seems to create more colourful and interesting displays (got inspired by the European toy shops) and I can bring out all my finished and unfinished work together.
