Henry Lachouque's WATERLOO (1 Viewer)

Cool story. I actually read somewhere that Sargent Ewart was ordered after capturing the French standard to go back behind the Brits' lines. This definitely saved his life as we all know the fate of the Scot Greys charge at Waterloo...

Well I don't think you can be sure it saved his life but it certainly improved his odds.;) At the end of the day, the Greys suffered 45% casualties, which is about the same as their sister Union Brigade units, the 1st Royals and the 6th Inniskillings. Of these roughly half, or slightly more for the Greys, were killed. Besides, given Ewarts 1.9 meter size and well known strength, I would pity the Lancers that picked on him.;):D

Well, in terms of probability to stay alive: wrt choosing between 100% (by going to the rear) and 75% or less (to stay in the battle), I would still go with the former ;). But no need to argue on that one since we will never know for sure what would have happened to him if he would have stayed in the mêlée...

My bargain book arrived today and it is indeed in near perfect condition. It seems a fine addition with many lovely plates and a very interesting and often humorous French spin on the campaign. Many thanks to all of you who recommended it.

That's a great get, especially at that price. Have you Lachouque's "Anatomy of Glory"? It is the classic on the "Old Guard" and is gorgeously illustrated. It is a must have for Napoleonic collectors. -- Al

Spitfrnd,

Well done !! It is great buy for $10.00.

I was afraid you might just get a reading copy.

Happy Reading,

Raymond.:)

Two other books I highly recommend Bill to you and any other Napoleonic Wars student; Napoleon En Allemagne La Campagne de 1813 by Clement and Napoleon En 1814 La Campagne De France by Koch.

Both are in French, but who cares, the artwork is jaw dropping, just two spectacular books, but you won't find either one for 10 clams I'm afraid................, I paid 180.00 and 170.00 respectively, but worth every cent IMO........maybe Santa will drop a copy of each under the tree, I heard you were on the "good" list this year.........:p

Just ordered Waterloo (Lachouque) from Half.com for $13 (like new). Let's see what I get ;). Thanks all for the recommendation!

I have also the Waterloo (prologue and edited by Lord Chalfont) which gives interesting accounts on this memorable battle from the Anglo-Dutch side by William Seymour, from the French side by Jacques Champagne and from the Prussian side by Colonel E. Kaulbach.

I found mine years ago in a second hand shop in Johannesburg.
I also found some great Civil War books at the same shop.
To get back to our Gallic Historian, can you actually find where he says that Napoleon lost? :D:D
It is a lovely book and a worthy addition to any Napoleonic book shelf.
