I wasn't sure where to post this, so I'll put it here.

Does anyone know if anybody makes figures of Highland dancers or participants in Highland games?

I know that William Hocker has a set of highland games, but all of the figures, I believe, are men. Several years ago, I saw some figures of young women performing the sword dance. They didn't interest me too much then, but now my daughters are learning highland dance, and they've taken my Black Watch officer's sword that's supposed to be a back drop for my BW figures and they're using it for practice! We've been to some highland games for dance competition, pipe band competitions, etc., and I thought that this would be a great subject for civilian figures.

If this makes any sense, please let me know if you've seen anything like this.

Thanks

Hi,

This would be an excellent cross over type of piece that would mix well with the Scotish Military figures out there right now. You may want to suggest this to one of the makers that already are making civilian pieces, such as Imperial or Trophy Miniatures of Wales LTD. Tommy Atkins in the U.K. makes a set of 42d Regiment soldiers that includes a fiddler and a dancer they are part of their Battle of Bushey Run, French and Indian War Period. There are also many manufacturers that make pipers. My suggestion to you is to contact some of these manufacturers and see if they have a set like you have described. Sometimes if you find the right maker they will build you a special set, of course this may be cost prohibitive with the current rate of exchange but its worth exploreing. I hope this helps.

Thanks for the info about the Tommy Atkins figures. I found a picture of them on their website, and I think I'll order them. I'm still looking for figures of female dancers. I know I saw some figures depicting the sword dance several years ago. As I recall, the figures came painted in several different tartans. Now, I have no clue where I saw them or who made them.

As far as pipe bands are concerned, military bands are very easy to find. I've seen some police pipe bands too. However, finding civilian bands is quite challenging.

Thanks for the help.

Hi Blackhat,

I will see if I can find any civilians doing the sword dance. I also think you could convert any of the pipe bands out there to look like civilians by repainting them or having them done for you by a painting service. I have seen those advertised in Military History Magazine and on the web this may be the way to go. Best of luck.

I just recieved the fiddler and dancer from tommy atkins. They are really nice...

Thats excellent! Sorry I took so long to reply but I was out of town on vacation in the north woods of Wisconsin and only had dial up there so it took forever just to read an email. Hope you can find or convert some figures to finish up your set idea.

HI Gideon,

I'm going to the Highland games this weekend in the Seattle Area. They are susposed to have a lot of dancing and pipes competitions with vendors hawking their wares so who knows maybe there will be someone selling soldiers. We can hope right. :)

I wish you the best of luck - I hope you get the Tommy Atkins there. If not, contact me again. Hopefully (I say that with some sarcasm), I will find out when the next portion of my TA order will be coming in. This is the order I placed almost 8 months ago which I only recieved 45% of.

THere are supposed to be more Highlanders in that portion and Jacobites.

Hi,

Well we had a great time at the Highland Games! The Pipe and Drums Bands were awesome. No luck on the soldiers though. Had a good time just the same.

Dave

I'll send an email to TA to see what is going on.

Thats probably a good idea. I hope the order is resolved soon. If I come across any other Highland types I'll let you know, especially a pipes and drums band.

Alexanders Toy Soldiers make a set of Napoleonic Highlanders doing the sword dance, it is part of their Duchess of Richmond's Ball series. You can see them on their website.

Try Dorset Soldiers, they make a Female Highland Dancer.

There is a company in Scotland called Caberfeidth Miniatures which makes a very interesting line of Scottish themed sets. They have a "Mess Dress" series representing various regiments. They also have sets on barracks life, mascots, and I remember seeing a pool table vignette on eBay. They may make what you are looking for. Try bill Hockers reference section at www.wmhocker.com or do a google search.

Tommy atkins will be releasing a new range of highland figures in the near future these will include Highland games figures, shooting figures, fishing figures, burns supper figures and various general tatan clad highland civilian figures. We will have these fully listed and available for purchase at the London December show.
These will also be available for purchase on the Tommy Atkins E Bay toy soldier store and on the Fusilier/Tommy Atkins web site www.fusilier-miniatures.com
