Hiriart has made a number of special non-catalog sets of British colour parties. Normally, a Hiriart catalog colour party set that has two flags will have eight figures, but most of these have fewer figures. The first is THE ROYAL HORSE ARTILLERY COLOUR PARTY with two flag bearers and four colour sergeants.

Another Hiriart non-catalog set is THE ROYAL ENGINEERS which also has two flag bearers and 4 colour sergeants.

A third set is THE ROYAL NAVY COLOUR PARTY with two flag bearers and four colour "petty officers." I am not sure what the Royal Navy refers to their escorts as, but since the U.S. Navy calls their NCOs, petty officers, I used that term.

Hi Mike - You would be correct to call those escorts Petty Officers - which are the equivalent rank to a sergeant in the army. However, don't confuse the three gold chevrons on their left arms with a sergeant's stripes. Those chevrons are long sevice and good conduct badges and are worn on the left upper sleeve only, and below the actual rank badge. The rank badge for a Royal Navy PO is shown below (with cap badge to the right). They are normally worn in red in working dress, though gold is used on "best" uniform.

Hiriart have therefore missed out on the proper badge, though it is admittedly confusing.

This next pic. might also help clarify a bit more. Note that "Trade" badges are worn on the right arm - but "rank" (e.g. Petty Officer etc.,) is ALWAY on the left. Hope this helps.

The reason I know, is that my Dad was a PO during WW2.

Nice sets again though. johnnybach

Thanks for the information, JB. I wondered if those gold, army-like chevrons were correct for the Royal Navy. Never having served around U.S. Navy personnel during the three years I served in the U.S. Army, I must admit that I never learned the names of the various navy petty officer ranks. The army had gold service stripes, not chevrons, which were worn on the cuff areas of dress uniforms for both war time and length of service, but I didn't earn any during my three years on active duty.

Another non-catalog set is THE BUFF'S REGIMENT COLOUR PARTY. This time it has seven figures including an officer.

Here is second photo of THE ROYAL NAVY COLOUR PARTY found in the third post; it is from another angle and shows the flag details better.

This is a non-catalog, special colour party partial set based on regular catalog set 1082 ROYAL MARINES which normally has the figures (i.e., an officer, drummer, and seven men) without any flags, but at present arms. There is another catalog set 1009 ROYAL MARINES where the figures are marching and includes an officer, flag bearer, and seven men. Last year, I ordered a variation of set 1009 as a full colour party to include two flags and two escorts.

Very nice set Mike, do you have a picture of your set that you could post? And thanks for posting all these Hiriart figures. :)

Hi Buster,

I am glad you like the set. It is my pleasure to post all these Hiriart photos, since, before I started all these Hiriart threads, it was hard to find any photos of their remarkable 340 set catalog for all of us who love traditional glossy, 54mm toy soldiers. My special colour party set is still tied into its box, but I will endeavor to take a picture of it for you when I get a chance. I also ordered it with extra men to flesh out the set.

Thanks Mike, I was going to ask you if there was a web site to see all the Hiriart sets, but I guess ..... thanks to you ..... this forum is the best place to see them. :)

I know what you mean about having figures still tied in their boxes, I have three or four WmHocker sets in that state ..... haven't found the shelf space for them yet! :rolleyes2:

Hi Buster,

Unfortunately for me, only about half of my collection is on display even though I have six curios, all of which I have added extra shelves to; a bookcase; and two table dioramas. I only have about 10 percent of my Hiriart collection (about 250 sets) on display. The rest of them are still in their boxes in the garage or in one of our three linen cabinets as per the attached photo.

Hi Buster,

I have attached photos of set 1009 ROYAL MARINES COLOUR PARTY that I received in August. The first attachment is a stock photo of the standard 1009 catalog set with an officer, flag bearer, colour sergeant, and six men. The other four photos are the set as I ordered it with an officer, two flag bearers, two colour sergeants, and three men.

This is a photo of the three extra men I ordered with set 1009. The next time I order this set, either as the catalog or colour party versions, I am going to also order six extra men which will give me an officer, two flag bearers with two colour sergeants, and 12 men (3 rows of 4 men).

Beautiful figures Mike, I like the marching poses even better. Thank you for posting these pictures.

If you don't mind another question, how long does it usually take to have a set made? Thanks.

Hi Buster,

Generally speaking, I also like the marching figures better than the at-present-arms figures. However, I do like to have the later for route liners or for formations. Regarding the time it takes to have a set made: In March 2011, I placed my annual Hiriart order for 161 sets; about 1/3 for me, 1/3 for other collectors, and 1/3 to sell at the West Coaster. I received part 1 of the order in June which had about 50 sets and part 2 in August which had about 50 more. I hope to receive the final third of the order this month. So the answer is that it depends---three months, five months, or ten months. Hiriart does not stock sets in inventory, but rather makes them to order. As soon as I receive part 3 of my 2011 order, I will send my 2012 order in which is for about 120 sets.

The first photo is a formation based on set 1009 THE ROYAL MARINES including a non-catalog colour party with four colour sergeants and three add-on sets with nine men each. The second photo is regular catalog set 1022 THE ROYAL MARINES BAND with 19 figures. The formation and band would make an impressive display.

Agreed! :)

That set 1022 The Royal Marines Band is another beauty, and you're right about sets 1009 and 1022 making for an impressive display ..... well done! :salute::

B.
