Hiriart has a number of Imperial German cavalry regiment sets in its' catalog that I am particularly fond of. The standard catalog sets come with five figures to include an officer, bugler, and three men. I have special double sets in my collection with five extra men. This is set 1148 TOTENKOPF HUSAREN as I ordered it.

Oops! The last two photos on the first post are obviously from another set. There are from set 1138 GARDE HUSAREN.

This Hiriart set 1236 KAISER CUIRASSIERS, The White Curiassiers. Another collector also ordered this regiment as a nine figure mounted band including a drum horse.

Hi Wolfgang,

Thanks, I am glad you liked them. They even look good still tied into their boxes.

Best regards,

Mike, thanks for showing your sets, they are very pretty, very much in the classic style!

I didn't know that Hiriat made these sets. I'm adding these to my long-range wish list.

Prost!
Brad

I do so agree with all of the others who like these Mike - I'm practcally dribbling, looking at these. They are lovely.

If Hiriart EVER change their mind about supplying castings for people to paint themselves - PLEASE do let us know! They do a lovely job, I know - but that just ain't my hobby. I wouldn't mind betting that Brad (Baron) feels the same. johnnybach

Hi Brad,

You're welcome. Hiriart actually has 340 sets in its' catalog plus another 40 sets in a separate Spanish Civil War catalog. If you or any other Forum reader would like a catalog list, contact me directly at matara42@roadrunner.com and I'll send you a copy. The catalog has a cross reference following the list of sets by country and type (e.g., infantry, hussars, artillery, etc.) which helps sort through the 340 sets.

Thanks JB, they are lovely. I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for Hiriart to sell castings, I just don't see it happening.

Thanks for giving us so much eye candy! I've got a request: the only info I can find on the Hiriart company is that Jaime Hiriart started it in 1980 in Montevideo. Can you give us some more details? Ideally as generous a description as Bill Hocker or Beau Geste provide of their businesses on their sites :smile2:. Not really expecting that much; I'm just curious if it's a one-man operation, who does the master figures, and so on.

Hi Mike,

I hope to write an article for Toy Soldier & Model Figure magazine on Hiriart at some point in the future. They do not have a website. Jaime Hiriart retired several years ago and his son, Guillermo, who I deal with, is running the company. I believe that there is a woman painter he uses, but that might just about be it. That is one of the reasons I place just one order per year with Hiriart and I usually wait until I have received the last sets from the previous order before I send it to him. This enables him to plan his production throughout the coming year better with the other two or three large customers he has. Last year, I ordered 161 sets, which was a little too much for him; this year I am limiting my order to 120 sets. I placed my 2011 order in March and hope to receive the third and final part any day now. He makes the sets to order and does not stock inventory.

Simply amazing! They take my breath away.

Thank you Mike, I am glad you like them. Maybe, they will tempt you, in the future, to diversify away from you emphasis on collecting just Greek figures.

As Richie Ashburn used to say, "Right you are", John! The quality of the finish is excellent, but I would also enjoy painting them myself and producing some of the other regiments in the Imperial Army. That's the great thing about the Imperial German hussar regiments--the same casting can be used to represent almost every one of them, or all, if you don't mind painting the Totenkopf and Garde star badges for the Guard regiments.

Prost!

Thanks, Mike! Email inbound.

Frank Longstreth used to sell Hiriart, too; he would take a table at our show till he passed away in 2008. But I wasn't really aware of the extent of the catalog.

Prost!

As I commented earlier to JB on the subject of castings, Hiriart does not sell them, so regretfully those of you who do your own painting will have to go elsewhere for castings. I do agree that the Imperial hussar regiments lend themselves to being made on a more widespread basis using the basic Hiriart sculps. I have though about ordering other non-catalog hussar regiment sets from Hiriart in the past, but just haven't done it yet.

This is a stock photo of Hiriart set 1301 SAXON UHLANS. I have this set in my collection, but not as a double set. As with the hussars, it would probably lend itself to being used as the basis for other uhlan regiments.

Hi Brad,

I purchased my first Hiriart sets (by phone) from Frank Longstreth in Hudson, Ohio, too. There is an earlier thread from 2007 which has the Hiriart catalog as it existed at that time; it now has an additional 53 sets. Hiriart always sends me an updated catalog CD with my shipments. I hope to get it at any time---I am anxious to see what they have added. They indicated last year that they were working on a World War II British Eighth Army set with a General Montgomery personality figure which I hope is on there.

I'm looking forward to the article! I found this interesting blog entry: http://soldaditossudamericanos.blogspot.com/search/label/(C) Hiriart, but my Spanish is nonexistant... I've got a Victorian Colonial British officer with the hex-shaped version base shown at the end of the pictures- he was my first Hiriart figure. There's is a catalogue listing in the very first thread here in the Hiriart section- incomplete?

Hi Mike,

I have also seen that blog, but I don't speak Spanish either, in spite of the one year of high school Spanish I suffered through. Actually, my teacher was probably the one who suffered given how bad I was. I believe it says he originally started out making 100mm figures in wood. He later switched to lead, glossy figures which he began selling in 1982. I recognize many of the figures as coming from the current catalog. The series of bases show the evolution of same until it reached the last one shown, which is how all the sets now come.
