HIRIART Inspired by Britains (3 Viewers)

Hiriart also did a non-catalog variation on set 1197 as WWII BERSAGLIERI. I am not aware of Britains doing a similar set. The only Britains Bersaglieri that come to mind are the ones in their broad brimmed, cloth hats, blue tunics, and khaki trousers from the Boxer Rebellion in 1900. I have this Hiriart set in my collection, but the uniforms are more gray than those shown in this stock photo. There are also nine figures in the set, not the eight show in the stock photo.

Hiriart also made another version of catalog set 1197 WWII ITALIAN INFANTRY as WWII DESERT BERSAGLIERI. I also have this set in my collection.

This comparison is between Britains set 1 THE LIFE GUARDS and Hiriart's non-catalog version of set 1026 THE LIFE GUARDS. This version with lances is a variation on the standard catalog set which I do not have a photo of.

This comparison is between Britains set 100, THE 21ST EMPRESS OF INDIAS LANCERS in review order with Hiriart's non-catalog version 21ST LANCERS, REVIEW ORDER. The Hiriart set has an officer, trumpeter, and three lancers. I have also attached a second photo which adds a flag bearer and extra lancer to the basic Hiriart five man set.

While I admire the figures I feel that I should point out that prior to 1922 no Lancer or Hussar Regiment in the British Army carried flags. Dragoon Guards carried Standards and Dragoons carried Guidons. The light cavalry regarded their drum banners as their standards in the same way that the Artillery regarded their guns. When flags were eventually issued after Regiments had been amalgamated they were of crimson silk with the usual style of Regimental devices.

Thank you, I will defer to you in this regard. However, I would like to point out that none of Hiriart's catalog Lancer or Hussar Regiment sets come with flags. They all have an officer, bugler or trumpeter, and three men. The extra figures, including the flag bearer in the last photo, were ordered that way (not from me) by a customer in South America. I guess the customer isn't always right after all.

The 21st Lancers set is an extremely attractive set, even by the usual gorgeous Hiriart standard. -- Al

Thank you Al for your kind words, I am glad you like it. Of the various British cavalry sets (i.e., Hussars, Dragoon Guards & Lancers), the Lancers in general, are my favorites. On my 2013 order with Hiriart, I will be ordering all nine of Hiriart's British cavalry catalog sets for my collection, as is one other Forum member. I will also be ordering the non-catalog 17th and 21st Lancer sets, in review order, in 2014.

Here is a photo of Hiriart's non-catalog set of the 21ST LANCER BAND WITH DRUM HORSE, IN REVIEW ORDER. I don't know if Britains ever made a similar set or not. When I ultimately order this set, I will get it with two extra musicians so that I can display it 1 X 1 X 3 X 3 X 3. It is really a striking set to behold.

A Forum member and I have added the 21st Lancer Band to my 2014 Hiriart order (the 2013 order is already complete at 120 sets). We are both ordering it with two extra musicians. It will be worth the two year wait.

Here is Britains set 2076 THE 12TH LANCERS IN REVIEW ORDER compared to Hiriart's set 1338 THE 12TH LANCERS, REVIEW ORDER.
